"While criticism was the Intention on the part of the examining exam-ining hurpiiti and tlu visitors, the classes evidenced so many good points that there was little, if indeed any, cause for anything any-thing but the most favorablo comment. Miss Alice Weldon played the accompaniments accompa-niments for tho vocal selections. , A few of the most advanced pupils in piano hud tho pleasure of hearing Mme. Teresa. Carreno at the Shubert theater Tuesday night, and from their discriminating discrimin-ating accounts of the programme, It Is plainly evident that the supreme excellences excel-lences of tho celebrated pianist wore not altogether beyond their appreciation, und the concert thus proved an occasion of proilt as well as enjoyment to these aspirants as-pirants In tho nrt of "rhythmic sounds and melodies divine." The Interest born of competitive exercise exer-cise seems to be well understood by the students at St. Mary's, since this form of review continues to hold its place aa a favorite In many of tho classes. Two such tests of knowledge In certain portions por-tions of class work were passed with credit during the week by the graduates, gradu-ates, one In astronomy, the other In . the history of French literature. Tho third academics also acquitted themselves most creditably In a similar review of English literature, at which several members of the faculty and two visiting classes, the third and fourth academics, were present. If tho written exorcises of these students show u correspondence cor-respondence to the oral excellence displayed dis-played In this competition. It is safe to say that they are quite at home In the delightful company of the English men of letters. Tho Mother-Tonguo society welcomed to Its Friday meeting one of last year's members, Miss Edna Camomile, who has been obliged recently, on account of Illness', Ill-ness', to discontinue tho studies she was taking at the university, tit Is no slight encouragement to the members of the M. The feature of lost Friday's meeting meet-ing was a veritable demonstration that the theoretical acquisitions In tho conversational conver-sational art evidenced by tho young ladles at tho previous meeting, had boon put to a practical tost during tho week, each member having engaged another to talk with her for at least a quarter of an hour on some subject mutually agreed upon, Tho chlof points of merit or demerit de-merit In these conversations woro freely reported at tho meeting: and what with various degrees of success. Miss Reno; "Good Resolutions Resolu-tions and Their Effects on Character, Even When Broken," Miss White; "How a Notebook Reflects the Character of Its Owner," Miss Smith; "Whether Reading or Talking (on the same subject) Calls Forth the Bettor Exorcise of the Thinking Think-ing Faculties," Miss Sun; aud "The Question of Pupil Self-Govcrnmont," Miss Sulllvnn.
