The eodfishlng schooner Joseph Hush, which arrived today from Bering sea. reports re-ports a narrow escape from destruction by being burled under ashes thrown from tho crater of Mount Shlshaldin on Uni-mnlc Uni-mnlc Island. Tho old volcano, which had been in eruption nearly all summer, has thrown ashes on all vessels going through Unlmuk pass, which Is the gateway of Bering sea. On the morning of Juno S Shlshaldin was In an unusually furious mood, emitting emit-ting a cloud of ashes, which, carried thirty miles by a gale, compelled tho vessel's crow to go below the decktn When tho vessel had pnsscd out of reach of the downpour tho crow broke through tho hatches, which were burled under a fool of ashes and pumice. Tho schooner was sunk low on her water lino and If the vessel had not sailed out of the danger zone .'die must havo been sunk with all hands. |
