As tho result of a head-on collision between a freight train and a work train on the Great Northern this afternoon, eight men aro dead and four injured seriously. serious-ly. Tho wreck occurred because the ( freight, which was coming north, did 1 not stop at Atid-canj'on siding to allow tho work train to pass, but who is to I blame for this failuro has not yet been decided. Tho work train had order3 to pass tho freight train at Mid-canyon. Freight train No. G74 was- heavily loaded with oro from Butte for the Great Falls smelter and was coming north. Tho work train was on the way from Great Falls to a bridge over the Dearborn river, whero repairing was to be done. Tt consisted of at: engine, ca-booso ca-booso and pilo-driver. Tho engine was shoving the cars ahead, with tho caboose leading. Curve Adds to Horror. There is a curve in tho track about a. mile this side of Mid-canyon, and coming com-ing around that, tho work train rau right onto the froight. coming the other way. Conductor Drake and Brnkemnn Egan wero stauding on tho platform of -the caboose and jumped, but the bridge carpenters in the cabooso did not have that chauce. Seven of thorn were killed and tho other two in the car were badly injured. Both caboose and pile driver wero smashed to piecos and catching afire, wore burned up. Tho engiuo on the work train being on tho rear remained on tho track. The engine of the freight was thrown from tho track over an embankment towards tho Missouri river. The engineer of tho freight jumped, tho fireman was- carried over with the engine but miraculously escaped and crawled out through tho cab window of 'the engino after it had stopped rolling. Tho survivors on the ground who wero able to assist had a hard time getting out tho bodies of those which were recovered. re-covered.
