The work of preparing: the revised tariff bill was resumed re-sumed by the sub-committee of the houso ways and means committee today. Two meetings were held today, and there Is every likelihood that the tarlff-framluer committee, which consists of tho Republican Repub-lican members of tho full committee, will continue to hold dally meetings until the time comes to report tho bill to congress at the special session In March. Judge E. II. Gary has returned the printed copy of hla testimony with the I corrections he desires to make In tho linal report of the hearings. Ho does not change the substance of his testimony, but has made several corrections In tho figures which he pave while on the stand before the committee. Exton3ion of Principle. Tho tarlflf framcrs are giving consideration considera-tion to tho maximum and minimum duty problem in connection with tho new tariff. Although the United Slates wna the first to apply this method of securing favor-able trade relations with other countries. It has never applied the principle to mora than a few articles, whllu several foreign countries havo adapted the system to cover everything. If a maximum and minimum tariff bill becomes a law. It will be possible for tho president to extend tho benefits of the minimum tariff to thoso countries which give to this country tho benefit of their differential rates of duty. Great Britain would secure the benefits of our minimum rates because It levies no duties on Importations. Im-portations. Germany and France, each of which has a maximum and minimum tariff law, would probably prefer to grant to this country thHr schedule on duties If the same privilege is extended to their exporters. The United States has trade treaties with France. Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland, granting it reduction reduc-tion in the duties on certain articles only. |
