Hopper, the bicycle racer, who was probably mortally injured in-jured in a fall at the Salt Palace saucer track Monday night, is popular not only among sporting men, but with others universally, uni-versally, is evinced by the largo number of telephone calls as to his condition received at St. Mark's hospital, where he hovers between life and death. Inquiries by phone as to" his condition were no numerous between the time of his admission to the hospital, Monday night, and Wednesday morning, thnt the constant ringing of the tel'jpnone bell became be-came irritating and a louroe of annoyance, annoy-ance, and the hospital, to evade this, arranged ar-ranged with tho Information department of each telephone company to furnish the public with bulletins as to the progress prog-ress of his case every thirty or forty minutes. i Hopper was a clean rider and gritty, I and the attending physicians say that his Indomitable spirit, which carried him over the tape a winner many a time, Is helping him to hold his own now. and will be largely responsible for his recovery recov-ery if he lives. Fellow riders especially especial-ly are taking a keen interest in the slightest development In his decidedly critical condition. Mrs. Hopper, although she is almost prostrated from heart trouble and tho shock of her husband's Injuries, is remaining re-maining near him, showing remarkable nerve, and rendering all the aid within her power. |
