Show THOMAS HILL, PROMINENT WESTERN ARTIST, DIES WAWONA, Cal., July 1. Thomas Till!, the emlnont landscape artist, died today at his picturesque homo In the Sierra Madre mountains, at tho entrance of I lie ToHcmlle valley, at the age of 79 years. Hill, who was born In England, came to the Unltod States In 1S40 and located In 1SC1. In Philadelphia. Boston and Baltimore he was prominent In art circles cir-cles beforo coming to California, earning many prizes by his portrait work. In California Hill devoted himself to landscapes land-scapes and his paintings of the Yosemlto valley did much to make that picturesque portion of the State known to tho world. Ono of his paintings. "Driving the Last Spike," In commemoration of the completion com-pletion of the first transcontinental railroad, rail-road, became famous In California history, his-tory, as much for the offorts of tho painter to collect the 550.000 offered by Senator Stanford as for Its artistic merit.
