If vou arc an employee of the city and don't want your salary increased, all you have to do is to petition the City Council for a "raise," and havo the matter referred to the Finance committee. Tho .Finance committee will do the rest. This is what the Finance committee did Monday evoning with a largo number num-ber of petitions akinc for increases in salaries; also a number of petitions nskiug for an increase in "wages. There were petitions from the fire department, de-partment, the Btreet department, and a number of other departments. Also from men working on the strcetB and in city offices. Tho Finance committee com-mittee simply bunched the entire lot nnd rcconimonded that tho petitions be "filed.' To file a petition is equivalent to saving: ."Nay. nay, Pauline," to the individual who presents it. It should bo added that the recommendation recommenda-tion of tho committee wns adopted by unnnimous vote. Acting Mayor Perry submitted n message, vetoing the action of the Council in granting permission to J. P. Upon the recommendation of tho Committee on Engineering and Sewerage, the action of the Council, instructing tho publication of the notice no-tice of intention to pave A street with asphaltum from First to Fourth avenue, was rescinded. Mr. ftaybould introduced a resolution resolu-tion instructing the Board of Public. Works to have the intersection of Main and Third South street paved, at a net cost of $2000. The resolution was referred re-ferred to tho Finance committee. Tho Salt Lake Brewing company submitted sub-mitted a vigorous protest against the proposed increase in water rates, and the matter was passed up to the Waterworks Water-works committee. Mr. Hall's ordinnnce. providing that notices of meetings of the Board of Equalization be published one time, in stead of five times, as heretofore, was liasseil.
