Show SENATOR .DUBOIS WAS RIGHT. President Mark Austin spoke against members of the church joining secrot organizations, and declared that no person per-son belonging: to any secret organization should be promoted In the priesthood or given an offlco In the church, neither Hhould they be given a recommend to go in the temple or'tho Lord. The same Instruction In-struction applies to non-Uthepaycrs. From report of Fremont (Idaho) stake conference of elders' quorums, as reported in the Rexburg Standard. The Tribune has no doubt whatever that President Austiu js a constant reader of tho Deseret News. It is also al-so quite certain that he has perused the church organ 's lengthy and repeated protestations that there is perfect freedom free-dom accorded to all men within the Mormon church. Likewise, he has uoled the aescrtiou of the News that the contribution con-tribution of tithes by the saints is a voluntary choice with themselves. But it is evident thai Elder Austiu knows what the real doctrines of the church are in these repects, and is aware of the fact that tho romances of the News are prepared merely to fool tho ungodly Gentiles, as usual. It, is considered to be one of the most valuable privileges available to the devout de-vout Mormon to be permitted to enter the sacred temples. In fact, a life of hon-est3", hon-est3", uprightness, aud charity almost goes for nothing in the absence of the secret bindings, sealinga. and auoiuliugs to be had in these endowment edifices. Yet the Mormon who will exercise the liberty li-berty which the Constitution vouchsafes vouch-safes for every citizen, and associates himself with some fraternal society, for the protection of himself and his family from possible want and distress, he is to bo deniod the privilege of engaging iu what he considers to be the most encred and valuable ordinances of tho gospel in which ho believes. A fat lot of liberty there is iu a proposition of that kind, isn't there? But President Austin presented the actual situation. He preached the gospel in its simplicity, and as the lay members of the church understand it; not as it is twisted by the Desercl News, the president of the , church aud the missionaries, with tho solo purpose of deceiving outsiders aud shielding themselves from merited derision de-rision and suppression. "It is a voluntary offering, " declares de-clares Joseph F. Smith concerning the tithes. But the more honest Elder Austiu Aus-tiu gives us the straight of it when he says that the non-tithepaycr shall not bo permitted to "go iu the templo of the Lord." There are a great many other privileges of which tho non-tithepaycr is to be deprived, as well as this one; but hore is the .greatest imposi-lioh imposi-lioh of all. Suppose that a man has a family, and that he be earning ho more than enough to keep his wife and his children in common decency. If, under these circumstances, he considers ihat ho would be committing an injustice injus-tice toward his dear ones by robbing them of moneys for the purpose of paying pay-ing the cash into tho coffers of the church, then he is to be barred from the privilege of properly living his religion, and is to be deprived of his salvation, no matter if in other respects he be the moat consciencious Mormon on earth. In this connection wo will reproduce an expression made use of by Senator Pred T, Dubois of Idaho at tho Washington Wash-ington day banquet tendered to him in this city by prominent Americans. To I this expression the Descrot News of- fered unusually vigorous exception, and fell into a brief spam of abuse of Mr, Dubois on account of it. Here is the Dubois matter: If ho pays his tithing cheerfully and oboys counsel he Is recogni7:Bd by tho leaders of the organization as a good Mormon, no matter If he practlccr. all the vices which are common to frail hu- j manity. j Woll, here is a minor ccclcsiast who bears testimony to the truth of the 'words of Senator Dubois. President Austin plainly tells us that tho mini vVho does not pay tithes shall not be permitted to live his religion in its fullness, and therefore reap the high- j est heavenly reward. Now, as to j whether or not there is truth n the i Dubois assertion concerning recognition j by Mormon leaders of sinners who do j pay tithes, there is the tcstimonv available avail-able in the- attitude of Joseph F. Smith and the D'csoret News toward Joseph Marion Tannex. We are not sure that Tanner .pays tithes, bocausc usually his law-breaking kind' draw, upon the tithes A paid by others for tho support of their criminalities. But if Tanner is not a tithe-payer, then the sin of the leadors is the more grievous. And Tanner's case is but one of hundreds of such crimes that havo been committed within with-in the Mormon church. We dare tho Deseret News to show that this is not true; and consequcntlj-, tvc defy the church organ to demonstrate that Senator Sena-tor Dubois presented a false slatcment in this respect. Everything in the Mormon church is done by compulsion of the tyrannical hierarchy. Thcro is not permitted to tho. TTIOmbfir tmn infn fracidnrn in An anything but to commit crime; and for this ho receives the blessing and protection pro-tection of the prophets. You aro not permitted to live your religion if you don't pay tiShing. You arc entitled to the highest honors if you do pay tithes, even to that of brazenly aud pcrpct- ! ually defying the laws of God and man. The wholo history of tho church proves this to be true. And the Deseret Des-eret News knows that it is true. |
