Show SPEAKING OF MOTHERS. The cruel and malignant Deseret News says that Don Carlos W, Musser, In writing a book about the present-day present-day Mormonlsm and the present-day Mormon leaders, "has cast a blot upon the fair fame of the mother who boro him." "Was ever a. more Infamous Insult In-sult uttered by brutish lips or ghoulish pen than this? If It be true that Don Carlos W. Musser has cast a blot upon his mother's name by renouncing the faith which sho believed when he was born, then Charles W. Penrose, editor of the DeBGret News, has cast a blot a foul blot upon the name of his mother; for hn has departed from the faith which his mother held when he was born. Nearly all the long line of the prophets, seers and rcvelators of the Mormon cliurch have cast similar blots upon tho fair names of their mothers, because the shining lights of the cult, up to this generation, were men who left other churches to join themselves to Mormonlsm; and even the yDung hierarchy of today have departed de-parted from the Mormon faith as their mothers understood it. The bigoted and inhuman dragging of a. mother's personality Into an argument ar-gument of this kind, is characteristic of tho Deseret News and .-f the tyrannies of the Mormon church. They cannot argue like men; fhey merely rend like wild beasts. Don Carlos W. Musser is a man of exquisite sensibility and of high "Intellect. He has writ his name largi in all the contests in which he has been engaged. His patriotism to his country Is of that exalted type which adorns history. His courage, his patience In Ihe midst of adversity, and ostracism, and cruelly a combination of things -with which the Mormon hierarchy hie-rarchy surrounds such men as would escape from their toils all demon-stata demon-stata that he i of a superior type. Ho Is abl2 to make his own battle with the News upon any field whoro an honorable hon-orable man may enter. And the News, knowing this, with a ghoullshness such as would I efit that system of Chinese injustice where the relative Is made to suffer for tbe crime of the realiy guilty, shields itself behind the pretense that in opposing the crimes of tho Mormon hierarchy, Mr. Musser Is making contumely con-tumely for the mother at whose breast he was suckled. Talking about mothers, the editor of the D2seret News might say something in behalf of his own children and their mothers. He might repeat to tho world Just now, with groat appositeness, the testimony which he gave before the Committee on Privileges and Elections of thvi United States, to the el-ect that he vas living with two women, neither one of whom was his lcgalwlfe. |
