Lieb Assistant I'nlted States Treasurer at Philadelphia, for constant and persistent violation of the civil service ser-vice law while in office." Gave Him a Hearing. In n formal statement Issued nt the White House today by President Roosevelt, Roose-velt, Mr Tleb's removal Is announced. The President gave Mr. Lieb a heating last Friday, at the request of Senators Penrose and Knox of Pennsylvania. Mr Lieb submitted a long statement In answer an-swer to the charges made against him and was supported In his defense by Representative Pntterson of Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania President Roosevelt's statement, Which Is In the form of a letter to Mr Ueh, Is In part as follows. President's Statement. "I have ivareftilly considered the papers pa-pers in your case and the statements made by you In your own behalf and by Mr. Conlcy on b.-half of Hie ('Ivll Service Ser-vice ' ommission. It appears to me very clear that there has been a constant :md consistent effort on your part to evade the provisions of the civil rer-Vlce rer-Vlce law, to h:imper its workings as far as possible and to obstruct In every way the action of the commission I expert on the one hand that the eom-mlsslon eom-mlsslon shall endeavor not to hamper but to alii the otht-i publh er:ints of the Government in doing thir work sin ceSfully and on the other hand I expect ex-pect In return that the other publl-SHr.ints publl-SHr.ints shall ' co-operate with the commission and aid them In their efforts ef-forts to carry out the civil service law. His Faith Questioned. ' In your case It seems to me clearly established that you have sought continually con-tinually to take advantage Of every kind of technicality In older to avoid carrying out the law n good faith. By taking advantage of these technicalities technicali-ties you have kept on the roll in almost continuous positions certain of your own relatives and at least one person whose appointment was evidently pressed merely for political reasons, instead in-stead of making all proper effort to carry out the law as It applies to appointment;, ap-pointment;, within the classified service. "Under these circumstances of persistence per-sistence in wrong doing on your part it seems to ine that there Is no alternative but to remove you from ofllce. You are act ordingly hereby removed from the position of Assistant Treasurer of the United States." |
