Co. wero inspected and more of its officials examined by the Texas authorities authori-ties in the suit brought by that State to put Into effect the new railroad commission commis-sion tariff reducing tho rates of express companies between 9 and 10 per cent. In the course of croBs-examinatlon, the fact was developed that Wells, Fargo Far-go &. Co. in 1903 made a deal with the Southern Pacific railroad by which it got a renewal for thirteen years of the exclusive express privileges on the Southern Pacific lines. For this privilege privi-lege tho express company paid the railroad rail-road a bonus of a mliiion dollars, including in-cluding 5750,000 of express company stock, and agreed to give it 40 per cent of its annual gross earnings. The Texas officials are probing deeply Into tho company's statement of its expenses ex-penses In Texas and also into the vol-umo vol-umo of its receipts, in order to show that the company can afford to have Its tariffs reduced as proposed by the railroad commission. |
