Show JOHNSON ADMITS GUILT Acknowledges Forging Checks on Joseph McRae and Abducting Miss Hester Larson of Bountiful After an exciting chase extending over several days that took him Into almost every nook and corner of the county Deputy Sheriff Sloan yesterday succeeded In landing Edward Johnson a young sheep herder charged with forgery In the county Jail This Is not all The officer has already got Johnson John-son to admit his guilt and also that he has been guilty of abduction In having taken away against the will of her parents Heater Larson a girl of seventeen seven-teen whose home Is In Bountiful x Several days ago a warrant was issued is-sued for Johnson on the charge of I having uttered a fictitious instrument It being set out in the complaint that he had forged the name of Joseph Mc Rae a wellknown sheep man for whom he had been working It seems that while tending the flocks of Mr McTlae tho young man conceived the Idea of becoming a high roller After a slight disagreement with his employer employ-er Johnson was discharged and returned re-turned to his home In Salt Lake All the time he had the lady friend In Bountiful and desirous of raising the wherewith to show her a good time he became Imbued with the Idea of forging Mr MeRaes name to checks He now admits having approached D A Marcel a merchant of No 65 Commercial street and there made purchases In payment for which he produced one of the forged checks on Mr MeTlae for 51260 Tho merchant accepted this and for tho change that was due him gave one of his own checks A day or so later the young man returned accompanied by two friends and explained that they were going out to Lagoon and he desired to chow them a good time and asked tho merchant to cash his own check Thin favor was also granted When Mr Mcltao became informed of the doings of hfa herder he gave instructions In-structions to the men In the bank to look out for Johnson and also enlisted the aid of the Sheriff In running Johnson John-son down Johnson learned that they were after him and skipped to Bountiful Bounti-ful where he picked up his sweetheart and fled further During the Investigation Investiga-tion that was held here by the Sheriff and Mr McRae It developed that the man had forged many other checks one on Bert Marsh a saloonman of Bountiful and another on a gambling house The first was for 51350 and the last one for 511 I McRae and the Sheriff made a diligent dili-gent search for the runaway man In the city and later decided to run out to Davis county and search there The first man encountered on the train was Sheriff Abbott of Davis county Sloan said What arc you doing Im looking for a forger named Ed Johnson was the reply He forged a check for 11 up here So am I looking for a Fred Johnson John-son said Sloan I It developed that Johnson used the name Fred here but his true name seems to be Edward No trace of the missing couple could be found In Bountiful Boun-tiful and preparations such as half I tone pictures and full descriptions of Johnson were about to be sent out over tho Western country when the Salt Lake Sheriff landed him With Mr McRae Sloan started to make a visit to the young mans home In North Salt Lake and encountered the fugitive walking along the railioad track Sloan said to his companion Dont that fellow look like our man and McRae said Yew tlmtB he Johnson was taken Into custody and seemed not at all surprised He said he was expect ing It He told how he had forged the checks to raise money for the girl He said they had spent the night In Tay lorsvllle and then came to his parents borne here where the girl he said was satisfied to live She did not like her home he explained and he proposed to take her where she could enjoy life lie said they had not yet been married |
