the primaries In this city last night proving that there IH a deep Interest In party affairs at the opening of the campaign In many of the districts there were spirited contests con-tests calling out large numbers of ac live party workers but there was no bad blood and the general outcome was hIghly satisfactory rhe heat of the light was over the Congressional candidates Tho three recognized candidates James Devlrie Joseph Howcll and Daniel Harrington had enthusiastic friends working for hem and In some of the district there were line tests of strength Naturally the friends and backers of Sir Rowell and Chief Devlne were making claims after the close of the battle and each professed to be abundantly well satis led with the outcome STATEMENTS OF CANDIDATES George M Cannon v > ho Is I In this county Ve did very much better than we expected ex-pected to do Of course we did not cx pet to do a great deal In this city but vo have no complaint lo make as to the outcome of the primaries Chief Dcvlno said It looks as hough I had from 115 to 12G out of the total of 151 delegates In the county and a large number of the balance are doubtful My 1 vote will positively not fall below the first figure stated Of those who are I not for me out and out half arc doubtful and the other half ire divided I I among Messrs Howell I Smith and Harrington I am perfectly veil nutlsficd with the outcome and feel under great obligations to my friend In the city and county There was particularly good work done In my behalf and I appreciate It fully I took no part In the contests In tho various vari-ous districts and my only regret IH hat In some cases mutually good friends were on opposite sides on this proposition IonCAUCUS CAUCUS TODAY The second move will be at 3 30 thla afternoon when the Salt Lake county delegation to the State convention will hold a caucus In the courtroom In the old city ball on First South street for the purpose of organizing and ns some put It unifying the delegation It Is not thought that this means the adop tlon of the unit rule for the delegation Vt the caucus a member of the State thy committee t for Salt Lake county will he named a chairman and secretary of he committee will be selected and the members of the various convention committees will be designated This promises to be an Interesting caucus and nil the delegates elected are urged to
