Show GOVERNOR SA V GUARD Grand Review Held at Camp Funston FINE SHOWING BY TROOPS r Chief Ezccutlvo Undo Official Visit to N G U Encampment and Was Much Pleased With Appearance and Bearing of tho Hen Hundrcdo of Visitors at Camp > Drills Shortened Short-ened to Permit Preparation for Review Re-view Encampment Comes to an End This Forenoon Yesterday wan a gala day at Camp Funoton the occasion being that of the i official visit of Coy Wells and his military mili-tary staff The big review one of the chief features of the encampment took place P few minutes before sundown All day long the men had been busy making preparations for the review polishing every button and piece of equipment Everything was found In perfect order at an Inspection which was made just prior to the review by the company commanders MADE FINE SHOWING When the men turned out for the review re-view and retreat parade at tho sounding sound-ing of the first call It was with the determination of making the finest possible pos-sible showing and going through the ceremony without a hitch They lived up to that Intention When they marched to the parade grounds to the west of the camp it was with a military mili-tary bearing that elicited prnlao from the hundreds of visitors I who were gathered to witness the spectacle The First battalion In command of MnJ Ileywood led the way to the parade grounds closely followed by the Second battalion In charge of Capt Kamcr man The battery signal corp hospital hos-pital corps nnd cavalry formed on the left of the line AM soon as the line lad been properly formed Goy Wells and staff and Col Park and staff rode down the front and rear of the line There was not a single fault to be found with the formation PASSED IN REVIEW The Guard showed up to the best advantage ad-vantage when the organizations passed In review before the Governor and others oth-ers of the reviewing part In the marching of the men was the easy swing that characterizes tho movements move-ments of regulars SALUTED BY ARTILLERY Goy Wells and party went out to the camp on a special train which left the Lagoon depot at 430 p m and made a quick run direct to the resort In the party was Gov Wells Gen C S Burton Col Ferry and Col Pinkerton As they walked into camp a detail of trumpeters Bounded the Generals march and a salute of thirteen guns boomed forth a greeting At the outer lines of the camp the part was met by Col Park and escorted to regimental regimen-tal headquarters where they were extended ex-tended the freedom of the camp As soon as the camp had hecn looked over first call for retreat summoned all to the parade grounds Gov Wells was provided with a handsome bay charger which ho exhibited perfect case In handling sitting his mount with the grace of a military man At the conclusion con-clusion of the review his excellency complimented Col Park and the officers offi-cers of the brigade on the fine showing made by the men A REAL MILITARY CAMP Among the visitors at Camp Funalon were a number of ofllccrn of the regular regu-lar service who looked carefully about camp and watched the men at drill review and guard mounting The regulars I reg-ulars said last evening they could find nothing to criticise In the conception of military affairs held by the guard and its officers They spoke in tho highest terms of the soldierly retreat parade last evening WERE MANY VISITORS Hundreds of visitors were about the camp being allowed to go where they I chose It Is estimated that fully 1600 people viewed the retreat parade and the guard mounting that followed Immediately Im-mediately afterward A majority of the visitors remained for tho military ball and band concert which closed the days activity SPENT QUIET DAY Previous to the arrival of the concourse con-course of visitors the Guardsmen spent a quiet and rather uneventful day The routine was less heavy than on preceding days the drills being cut down In order to give the men time In Which to prepare for the inspection The feature of the morning was a skirmish skir-mish drill In which the First and Second Sec-ond battalions and the signal and hospital hos-pital corps advanced In extended order or-der across the fields west and north of the camp In the afternoon things were enlivened somewhat by a blanket tossing bee at which a number of hap less victims were sent writhing Into the air BREAK CAMP TODAY Early this afternoon camp will be struck and Camp Funston will cease to exist The forenoon will bo a busy one asthe men will be Inspected J and mustered for pay In addition to mak ing all the necessary preparations for breaking camp ATToUt 4 oclock the line will form and march to Farming ton where a special train for the city will be boarded |
