| Show HERALD M QUOTED NOW COMPELLED TO CORRECT FAKE INTERVIEW Interview Published in Prominent Part of tho Paper While Correction Was Set in Nonpareil andi Buried In an obscure cornel of the Herald yesterday there appeared a communication communi-cation rrum WOOl l A snow heaacu Mr Snows Revision The article is set in nonpareil type the smallest used by tho Herald and the heading consists of n single lue And thereby hangs a taleWhen When Mr Snow returned from the East Thursday the Herald secured an Interview with him whlph was pub lished on Friday morning under a flash head on the first column of the eighth page Republicans and Democrats alike were surprised when they read the Interview Mr Snow was of course among the number as he declares that he was misquoted on every statement of Importance made by him He was also exceedingly angry and demanded n retraction The matter was adjusted by the Herald offering to publish any correction that he might send In and he was promised In addition that the correction would be given as prominent promi-nent I place as that occupied by the original Interview The Herald then broke Its word by setting the correction un In nonpareil and putting It on the second page Mr Snows revision Is as follows Salt Lake City Utah Nov 2 1900 To the Editor of the Herald My attention at-tention Is attracted by sonic Inaccuracies Inaccu-racies In the Interview with mo appearIng appear-ing In this mornings Issue of the Herald I Her-ald Referring to my contract with manufacturers I manu-facturers and the misgivings they express ex-press with reference to the operations I of the trusts I did state that misgivings misgiv-ings wore entertained by some and recited re-cited two cases but I did not say that this feeling was general among manufacturers manu-facturers neither did I say There Is no manufacturer except the largest ones who feel safe I did however say that this feeling of distrust wua shared mostly by the small manufacturers manufac-turers with a limited capital who were not In a position to take advantage of the rapidly fluctuating markets Again I did not say In Chicago It seemed to me that organized labor was for Bryan almost to a man and I was told that this was the case In the other large centers of population What I did say upon this point was In substance sub-stance this That were one to Judge the result from the magnitude and enthusiasm en-thusiasm displayed In the Republican prosperity parade of last Saturday afternoon and tho Democratic eenlng I parade he could scarcely escape the I Idea that the labor element In Chicago was largely In favor of Mr Bryan but I did not say that I was told that this was the case In the other large centers of population I did venture the statement that In my jUdgment Mr Bryan was likely to carry Cook county by from 20000 to 40000 but that this view was not snares oy Lao Business men 01 emcago generally Moreover I stated tfat I tj felt It was practically certain that McKinley Mc-Kinley would carry Illinois but that his chief support must and would come from the country and cities outside of Chicago but that I claimed Illinois for McKinley without question You credit me with having made the statement that this same state of affairs af-fairs existed in Indiana Ohio and Michigan I specifically stated that Ohio and Michigan were considered thoroughly safe for McKinley but that Indiana was In great doubt In fact Democracy claimed It beyond question ques-tion I did not say that the coal strike In Pennsylvania made many thousand votes for Bryan but I did venture the opinion that the labor troubles there had operated to some extent In Mr Bryans favor and unquestionably this opinion IH shared generally throughout tho East I am further credited with having stated that Mr Bryan had a good chance to win Now I stated that I I thought the election was clearly Mc KlnleyH as evidenced by the differential differen-tial of 25 per cent In my betting Judgment Judg-ment n1enl I did say however that overconfident overconfi-dent Republicans would be greatly surprised sur-prised at the heavy reduction In McKinley Mc-Kinley majorities of 1896 In some or the Eastern Slates j GEORGE A SNOW |
