| Show UTAH ARTISTS ARE SNUBBED BT Br BrT B STATE T ATE FAIR FAUR JUDGES i c Failure to Award Prizes in Certain Classes Because Pictures Are Out of Value Raises Storm of Protest I Why Thy did the judges In the art depart department department department ment of the state fair withhold the awards for three classes of paintings which were clearly within the th limita limitations limitations set for these awards This is the question that is upper uppermost uppermost most moot In the minds of local artists at present According to the rules and regula regulations regulations regulations governing the award of ot prizes as printed by the State Fair association association tion these awards should have been made unless it was the opinion of ot the judges that the article exhibited was worth less than the award offered The only limitations in this catalogue read No exhibit shown ii 11 any previous Utah fair will trill be admitted in competition competition tion In this department and no award will be made in this department when in the opinion of the judges the article is worth less than the premium though it m mcf fy be the best beat of its kind exhibited Originality will be the first consideration None of the pictures in the three de do departments departments for which awards were with withheld withheld withheld held were ever exhibited at a fair in Utah before their originality cannot I be questioned the Judges will not say that they were worth less than the I premiums offered but nevertheless they the were withheld Puzzle Find the reason Fairbanks Statement For my part said J Leo Fair Fairbanks Fairbanks Fairbanks banks I feel pretty sore about it Not because I did not receive the prizes but because of the fact that the only reason the Judges could give accord accordIng accordIng accordIng Ing to the rules and regulations is that the best exhibit there was not worth the premium offered This is the first time I 1 have ex exhibited exhIbited exhibited at a state fair here in five years I did not do so willingly this tills time but so many friends asked me to send out some of my m own and my m fa fathers fathers fathers work that I finally sent some of the best we had here My landscape in oil A Rainy Night in Paris was rejected by b three ap apparently apparently apparently competent judges and the only reason visible is that it was not worth the premium offered for class which was 30 Now No the fact of the matter is that I have refused ref d for this picture I hold it at 1 laO O and nothing less would take it And other artists fared equally as bad in this class clans There is no explaining the reason continued Mr Fairbanks The judges when asked for one said sald We Ye did not feel like making an award avard on these pictures the secretary of the fair said The judges have made their report and I can do nothing so 00 there you OU are What reason could an artist have for exhibiting his work at a state fair said Mahonri M Young if it were w re not that he expected he would stand a chance to receive an award for them I speak not for myself but for artists in general I take the with withholding withholding withholding holding of awards to all when there were pictures clearly within the limits called for by the tho supervisors as an af at affront affront front to art in general I worked hard to make the art department of the fair faira a success and sd ad did my brother art artists artIsts artists Furthermore r I would not take less than 50 for even the merest sketch that I exhibited there while the high highest highest est award offered with one exception was sas as 35 When I asked Professor Profesor sor Edward Evans Eans one of the judges why the theaward theaward theaward award was not made in the water color landscape exhibit he said that in my case the exhibit was wag out of value Now I r consider that the water color I r exhibited there was the th best I r have ever done William M Chase of New NewYork NewYork NewYork York has purchased one of my water watercolors watercolors watercolors colors I have two In the Musee Car Carnaveli navell in Paris which were purchased by the French government and there are several In private collections in Paris and Baltimore All these were purchased for fOJ many miny times the amount of the award offered What I want is that the awards be made to some of the artists who exhibited exhibIted exhibited at the fair If It these awards are not made I want a just and valid rea reason reason reason son from those in charge as to why they were not made Richards Is Puzzled I am at a loss to understand why these awards were not made said L LG LG LG G Richards I received a prize of for one of my works and I suppose I should be satisfied but I feel that some explanation is due to those who exhibited their work at the fair as to why these awards were withheld One of these was a prize of 10 for the best original flower painting I 1 had my Corner of a Garden entered in this class and I can see no reason why it or some other in competition was not nol given the award The only apparent reason according to the rules and reg regulations regulations was that it and others ex exhibited exhibited exhibited were out of value but that has been exploded since for shortly after its exhibition at the fair I sold this picture for 20 a price which I r con considered considered considered to be very ve low lowI I 1 want these prizes awarded to the right parties or if not a reasonable excuse from the state fair authorities for not awarding them The accommodations accommodations accommodations for exhibiting pictures out there were very bad and we artists worked hard to give the best showing possible SAIl All we asked was a square deal and I feel that we did not get it |
