Show Killed by a Snow-slide. The body of Nephi B. Fretwell, killed by a snow slide on Tuesday morning, was brought into town yesterday. Mr. Fretwell had been engaged ia working at the Davenport mine, Silver Fork of B:g Cottonwood canon, about 250 yard, from the summit that divides the two Cottonwoods. Three other men were similarly employed with him, two being down the shaft at the tij)e, aud two Messrs. Fretwell and Andrew An-drew Hildebrand being in bed in a cabin at the top of the shaft. Mr. LIddebrand, who was in a different part of the cabin from Mr. Fretwell. heard a peculiar sound as the snow rolled down, and in a few seconds if.er it crushed in the cabin, burying both men in the ruin. It is supposed that Fretwell was struck by some of the falling timber, breaking his neck, aud that he died instantly; Hildebrand received but trifling injury, as he informed in-formed us he only felt a little sore. The men in the shaft, Messrs. Wilson & Eliiott, with others, made every exertion exer-tion to dig them out, and succeeded after about two hoars' work in doing so. Deceased was, we understand, a nephew to Professor Albert Carring-ton Carring-ton of th:s city, was born in Lafayette 30unty, Wisconsin, and was twenty-one twenty-one years of age on the 1st of August last. He is spoken of as having been aline, promising young man. |
