Show TREATY OF PEACE SIGNED. One of the most terrible wars recorded re-corded in the history of the world, though of comparatively brief duration, dura-tion, has closed, and peace once more exists between Germany and Fiance. Germany has accomplished her purpose. pur-pose. Alsace and Lorraine are now German territory, witn trie tortmea citiea of MetJ,Strasburp,Thionville, and other strong fortifications. France pays Germany three hundred and twenty million mil-lion thalers as a war indemnity; and Par.s is to be spared the humiliation of seeing the victorious army make a triumphal entry. These are the points telegraphed. tele-graphed. A heavy storm east of Chicago interfered in-terfered with the working of the wires, and consequently the telegrams received re-ceived are 1 mited in details. But the simple fact that peace has been concluded con-cluded is the ma!n item that the world was waiting for. The government of France has now a mighty work before ir, in the pacification pacifi-cation of the country, the resuscitation resuscita-tion of commerce, and placing France on a solid foundation of prosperity after the exhaustive war through which she hasju-t passed. The Assembly will likely soon meet in Paris, when, among the sub jects to be discussed, will undoubtedly be the permanency of the republican government, or the adoption of some other form, monarchial or imperial. With the information thus far received, it is difficult to speculate on what results re-sults wiil be reached. But if the members mem-bers of the Asemb!y are wise, they will cease their miserab'e party struggles strug-gles for power, an 1 submit the question ques-tion of government to a free expres sion of the national will. |
