| Show I DUEL TO DEATH I IN TtAS TOW Fusilade Between Prominent Men of Waco AN EDITOR KILLED A JUDGE WOUNDED Affair Grew Out of the Mobbing of Iconoclast Editor Judge Gerald Had Written a Bitter Criticism and Filed it with Editor tor Harris Asked t Have Manuscript Manu-script Returned and Wa Incensed at Delay Bad Feeling Resulted I Ending i Deadly Affray Pitiful Scene at CloseSt Close-St Louis Nov 19A special to the Republic from Waco Tex says J W Harris editor of the Waco TimesHerald a morning paper and W A Harris his brother on one side and exJudse G B Gerald a prominent promi-nent citizen fought a duel to the death on the street tonight at 5 oclock W A Harris was shot dead J W Harris wounded fatally his body being paralyzed alyzed and Gerald was shot in the side and may die ORIGIN OF THE TROUBLE The trouble was the outcome of the mobbing of W C Brann publisher of the Iconoclast Gerald was an ex county judge and one of Wacos most prominent citizens He had written a bIter criticism on Baylor university with reference to the recent mobbing of W C Brann and had filed i with Editor Harris for publication Afterwards After-wards he asked to have his manuscript returned and became incensed at the editors delay In complying SHOT I THE BACK Bad feeling resulted and when Judge Gerald was crossing the street at the corner of Fourth and Austin streets at 5 oclock Editor Harris came out of a drug store and opened fire on him Gerald Ger-ald immediately drew his revolver and returned the fire Hearing the shooting = shoot-ing W A Harris came upon the scene and took a hand in the fusilade shooting shoot-ing Gerald from behind Gerald pursued pur-sued him into the drug store shooting as he ran Harris fell to the floor with the words You shot me in the back Gerald emptied the remaining charges in his weapon into the prostrate form scene of his victim Gerald then left the PAINFUL SCENE A little colored boy who stood near was shot in the leg by a stray bullet Editor Harris was carried into the drug store by friends His wife and daughter were notified and were soon at his side The scene was pitiful The wife and daughter were weeping while the husband and father lay prostrate unable to move a muscle of his body or speak His windpipe had been severed sev-ered by a bullet which injured his spinal column He was removed to his home but cannot live Judge Gerald was wounded in the neck and side While serious his wounds cannot be said to be necessarily neces-sarily fatal The excitement is very great and public opinion seems to be divided Judge Gerald is also an exmember of the legislature expostmaster of this city and widely known throughout the state He is 6 years of age He was armed with two revolvers the Harris brothers each had one The judge is fearless and noted as a man quick to resent an offense |
