MKINLET AND LABOR Interview Between the President and Samuel Gompers Washington Nov 19Commissioner I I General Powderly of the immigration I bureau has not yet been advised of the II declaration of immigration officials in II New York in refusing permission of landing of six Mohammedans on the I ground that they are believers in polygamy I poly-gamy nor is he willing to state what action he will take in the matter should it be appealed to him I is stated sta-ted however that the immigration bureau bu-reau would likely proceed on the assumption as-sumption that a polygamist is one who practices polygamy and in that case the immigrants in questions would be debarred from landing if it could be shown that they were advocates of polygamy whether they practiced it themselves or not Similar cases it is said have been before the bureau but in those the officials were not able to prove that the immigrants advocated the practice In case of an admission of their belief it is believed they will almost certainly deported I
