| Show POSTAL EMPLOYEES I THEY HAVE FORMED A VERY STRONG COMBIXATIOX Will Bring Pressure to Bear Upon Conjjres to Overturn Certain Regulation to bleb They Are Opposed I Washington March 18The post office department has information of the formation of a powerful combina i tion of postal employes designed toil to-il bring pressure upon Congress to overturn over-turn certain regulations and rules of I the department The employes have been encouraged by success in attach I ing to the last postofflce appropriation bill an amendment which suspended an order for the department This order was Issued last June and directed that before the first of May 1895 each railway mall employe should remove to some point along the line of route on whioh he was employed This was unsatisfactory to most of the clerks and they obtained legislation overruling the order The reason for Issuing the order Is explained at the department as necessary because at the time the order was Issued there were about 1300 of them in the service ser-vice who did not live on the lines where they worked When there was an accident or anything else that requires re-quires emergency men those who were on leave and away from the line where they worked escaped the extra dutj and i fell upon those living on the route Of the 1300 who were living off the lines where they worked about 300 have notified the department they have or will remove their homes to the point requested Probably all of them will s remove notwithstanding the legislation overruling the order The department is now infrrmed that since the failure of legislation In the last Congress Increasing the pay of employes a combination has been I formed to pass this legislation and also to overturn those rules of the department I de-partment them which are unsatisfactory to I A high official of the department said today This combination Includes some thousands of employes In the railway mall service the letter carriers service ser-vice and In postofflces They are all in the classified service and protected from removal j The effect of this combination would be to create a sentiment against the I employes civil service law which protects these |
