Show IIAXDS OFF HAWAII Chicago TimesHerald Among the last acts of the Congress which has just adjourned was the defeat de-feat of the proposed 500000 appropriation appropria-tion to pay the preliminary expenses of the construction of a telegraphic cable from the western coast of the United States to Hawaii The Senate in which the Democratic majority had disappeared inserted the item in the sundry civil bUJ I was stricken out by the Democratic House and the I Senate was compelled to abandon it or lose the entire bUt I was well known that President Cleveland was decidedly hostile to the Hawaiian cable appropriation This identifies the defeatof the measure asa as-a matter of Democratic policy on I which the Democratic House and the Democratic president were united as against the Republican and Republca mongrel mon-grel majority in the Senate Herein is decisive indication that there has been no change in the Demo I 1 d cratic position on the subject of Hawaii Ha-waii The Democrats will not advo annexation interference cate anne aton nor any with Hawaiian affairs by which the United States would become responsible j responsi-ble for the proceedings and acts of I either party or faction on the islands i The Democrats are opposed to the i adoption by this country of a Polynesian I Poly-nesian policy of any kind except that i of noninterposition in the affairs of that I part of the Pacific ocean and its people peo-ple Hawaii must work out its own I destiny as the United States did on a larger scale unaided and unimpeded by any foreign intervention Under the guidance and inspiration I of President Cleveland who follows classic Democratic precedent the Democratic I Dem-ocratic party has taken this stand I Appearances indicate that the Repub i I licans for the campaign of 1896 will embody jingo and annexation planks i in their platform I is not probable that the illusory arguments in favor of such a national policy would pervert I the judgment of the American people At any rate the Democratic party will not refuse to meet the issue whenever I I is raised and will fight the battle I j of national honesty and honor against that of aggression wrong and theft I will press the task of righting wrongs at home instead of assuming the burden bur-den of maintaining wrong abroad I I |
