Show f iEt E Since the days of Ponce de Leon whose little excursion In search of the fabled Fountain of Youth is still well remembered by our oldest inhabitants as a country journal would put it down to the time of BrownSequard whose Elixir of Life caused old John Crocker to take a bath indulge in a shave and put on a clean shirt there have been many secrets unearthed by the chemists and scientists but nearly all of the remedies proved fiat failures fail-ures after a few experiments that gave hope of success It is but natural therefore that the world should be a little skeptical as to the claims made by the discoveries of antitoxine Antitoxine may prove to be as much of a delusion as the Keely motor so far as we may now see I notice however that some very wise people are Inclined to scoff at the idea that any good can possibly come from the use of the remedy S In a recent number of the New York Timesand that I take it should bean be-an authorityit is claimed that the report re-port of Professor Widerhofer concerning concern-ing the use of diphtheria antitoxine in St Anns Hospital for Sick Children at Vienna shows a large reduction of i the mortality percentage in such cases Let the figures speak for themselves From 1862 to 1894 the annual diphtheria diph-theria death rate in this hospital varied Between 32 and 72 per cent and the I I highest mortality was commonly observed ob-served in the months of October November and December For the first nine months of 1894 the mortality was 526 per cent During the last three months of the year the anti toxine treatment was used the number num-ber of cases being 100 and the mortality mor-tality for this period was cut down to I 21 per cent The professor says To I my mind there does not remain the slightest doubt that Behnngs anti toxine serum influences certain classes of diphtheria cases and not the mildest cases either so favorably that Behr ings serum therapy deserves the name of a specific remedy against diphtheria with which no other so far discovered deserves comparison Between April 1 and December 31 I there were 193 cases of the disease in the Childrens hospital at Leipsic During Dur-ing the first four months in whi lh the serum was not generally used the mortality was S98 per cent but in the last five months during which a majority I ma-jority of the patients were treated with I the new remedy the rate was reduced to 18 per cent or 22 deaths out of 122 cases Only 89 of these cases however received the antitoxine treatment and the mortality for these 89 cases was only 146 per cent Fifty thousand bottles of antitoxine have been gratuitously distributed in Paristhe cost being not less than 60 I 000 Results abroad so far as my reading read-ing goes have been very encouraging I in America much good has resulted I I am anything but an admirer of those gentlemen who allege they are able to cure every disease that flesh is heir toby to-by one prescription and I am onto the curves of the claims of many alleged = al-leged eminent specialists but I do hope and trust that the use of anti toxine will not be discontinued in this city simply because of the fact that it failed to work in one or two cases S S SAnd S-And while I am on this subject I wish to refresh the minds of parents as to the virtues of the fumes of tar and turpentine In diphtheria cases Put the tar on a shovel pour turpentine on It apply a match and keep the combination combi-nation burning until the room in which the patent lies is full of smoke In nine cases out of ten the results will be beneficial If one trial does not do good keep at it In case the patient is breathing with great difficulty dif-ficulty keep the room full of the smoke until the breathing becomes natural even though hours are necessary to accomplish the result I was the first to advocate this kind of treatmentadded to the aid of the attendant physicianin this city This was three years ago In a late number num-ber of the Scientific American I read that it has given relief in hundreds of cases This prescription goes free with this issue of The Heraldand the druggist is cheated out of his percentage It is simply this Rx Tar q s Turpentine q s Burn on shovel according to directions direc-tions above JJ = |
