Show HAS THREE POINTS CAThOLIC CIirnCH XDu THE SINGLE TAXI TAX-I IJelives That the Land of Speculators Specula-tors Should lie Taxed Says the Rev T I Malone of Denver Chicago March 16 Single taxers heard Rev T H Malone of Denver on The Catholic church and the single sin-gle tax at Orpheus hall He began by saying that the question of the attitude at-titude of the Catholic church toward the single tax might be considered from three points of view theological philosophical and humanitarian The conditions which hastened the downfall of the Roman republic exist today and today menace the life of our own republic I do not know how it is in Illinois But I do know that in Colorado ability and worth do not send men to the United States Senate I is with us no longer a question of ability or of worth but a question a mans power to buy votes Just as Italy was absorbed by vast estates so today is America absorbed by the corporations Truly has i been said that this country coun-try is today a country of landlord with tenants a helpless majority I has become be-come a grave question as to whether we are being governed for ourselves or whether we are being governed for the foreignersthe foreign land holders And let me say now and I say it knowing that I may be greeted with the cry of anarchist or alarmist that while the 5000000 unemployed sit tonight to-night holding out the hand of suppli cants they will some day rise and the supplicants hand will become that of the avenger and will strike down the oppressor And yet there is idle land which is the source of all wealth and he who owns it owns the people who must use the land Labor applied to land produces pro-duces wealth We have enough labor and enough land yet far from enough wealth How shall this be remedied One remedy at least is to tax the land speculators And this in brief is the doctrine of the single tax And let me tell you that if you think I could speak things not orthodox and still escape the displeasure of those in authority au-thority over me you little know the discipline of my church |
