Show SCHOOL FUNDS J Jl Morris Says the County Court Does Xot Control To the Editor of The Herald The statement ostensibly emanating from the county selectmen that the excounty court had in 94 misappropriated misappro-priated funds of S3 belonging to the several school districts is absolutely and unqualifiedly false and evidently prompted by the ignorance and animus of Its authors The county court has no control of the funds belonging to the school districts Such funds are paid to the collector by him recovered into the county treasury and by the treasurer paid out upon the order of the superintendent of schools to the district dis-trict trustees The law neither directs nor permit the county to advance uncollected un-collected taxes to the several school districts of the county A claim of this character was presented to the county court in 94 by district No 55 and upon advice of the county attorney attor-ney was denied nor does the law director direct-or permit the county treasurer to pay to the various school districts any pro portion of the redemption money I is I stated that because of the nonpayment by the county of the school funds of 93 that some of the county schools will probably have to close before the end of the regular term The collector I struck off to the county 123 parcels outside of Salt I i of land in the county i Lake city for delinquent taxes of 93 i The total of such taxes amounted to I 5128301 Onefifth of this sum or S23660 properly belonged to the outlaying I out-laying school districts Upon the sales i the county advanced 382 as costs for I selling etc The redemptions from such sales in 1S94 amounted to 72527 i and of such sum there might con I strcivei be due to all of the outlaying out-laying school districts the sum total of 14505 These figures do not include i the territorial school tax nor the special levies for special purposes in three districts but only the county school tax proper I the want of this 14305 will cause the closing of the district schools throughout the county and the voting of 378000 of gold bonds will stay the calamity it is certainly imperative that the bonds should be voted without a murmur and without a negative JOSEPH R MORRIS |
