Show I ARIZONAS CONSENT A MEMORIAL PRATING FOR CEDING TERRITORY TO UTAH It Has Been Introduced in the legislature legis-lature and Will He Pushed Should it Pans the Colorado Canyon Will Bound Utah The proposition to give to Utah that part of Arizona territory which is isolated isola-ted from the seat of government by the almost impassable Grand Canyon of the Colorado and by all the laws of geography belongs to Utah is now taking tak-ing more definite shape When the proposition prop-osition was made in Congress last winter by Mr Rawlins he found himself handicapped handi-capped by lack of ofuCial declaration as to the desires of Ariozna In this respect Neither the Committee on Territories nor the other leaders of the House cared to do anything so radical against the desires de-sires of Arizona and therefore consideration consider-ation was deferred until that territory could make itself heard On receipt of this information A W Ivins who has been pressing the matter for several years immediately set to work to obtain an expression from the Arizona legisla ture which is now in session That his work has not failed of effect is evident from advices he has receipted He has been notified that a memorial to Congress has been introduced and will be pushed and that it has more than a fair chance of success The memorial reads as fol lows Your memorialists the Eighteenth legislative assembly of the territory of Arizona respectfully beg leave to represent repre-sent to your hnnornhlA hnrtJpR That there is new before your honorable bodies a bill presented by the honorable delegates from Utah providing for a change in the boundary line between the territories of Arizona and Utah whereby the Grand canyon of the Colorado river will become the boundary line That said Grand canyon is an impassable impass-able barrier there being no point between be-tween Lees Ferry and Seamans a dis tance of over two hundred miles where it can be crossed That along the north side of the Grand canyon adjacent to Washington and Kane counties there is a narrow strip of land which the pending bill would attach to Utah this strip is a desert and there are but few settlers upon it That some of the land which would ben be-n Utah is in Mohave county and some in Coconino county Arizona and at present hardships are entailed upon those living north of the canyon in their being compelled com-pelled at times to attend the county seats of their respective counties to transact Business at court look after the proper adjustment and payment of taxes etc while it is also true that officers of the law are unable to nroperly look after the peace of the portion of the territory in question Therefore be it I Resolved By the legislative assembly I of the territory of Arizona that our dele itei t ei re ate bel gate in Congress be and is hereby instructed I in-structed to cooperate with the honorable I i delegate from Utah to use all honorable I I means to bring this subject to the early I and favorable consideration of Congress realizing as we do the mutual benefits i I i that will thereby accrue to Arizona and Utah I I |
