Show STATE TROOPS PROTECT THEM Colored Screwmen Are at Work in New Orleans WHITE MEN REMAIN IDLE I XO FORMAL ATTEMPT AT A SETTLEMENT 1 SET-TLEMENT It is LIkely toBe Many Days Before Satisfactory ArrajigremeatH Will Be Made Troops Will Be Allowed to Rest Today and Xo Work Vine Vin-e Done Along the Shore New Orleans La March 16The labor la-bor situation hare is unchanged today The colored screwmen were at work under the protection of the state troops on foreign steamers which were loading load-ing cotton and there was no attempt on the part of their white rivals to interfere in-terfere with them in any way Numbers Num-bers of the whites remain idle but their time is spent in haunts and on the streets and they avoid as much as possible appearing on the levee There was no formal attempt to effect a settlement set-tlement of the trouble today The white screwmen held several meetings in secret but tonight showed no sign of being willing to recede from the position po-sition they have taken The merchants committee was also in session but their business was mainly to raise funds for the support of the troops They refuse to treat with the screw men and say they will be satisfied with nothing less than absolute surrender the acknowledgment of the right of every man irrespective of color to work on the levee The governor remained in the city but has toad no conference with either committee today It is likely to be several days before the attempt to make a settlement will be renewed seriously There is no work along the shore today and troops will be allowed to rest tomorrow The police this afternoon found another an-other victim of last Tuesdays riot about whom nothing wa known He was TV Miller a negro He was found at his home suffering from a severe wound in his right leg He had been shot with a Winchester He stated he was on the levee at the time the rioters riot-ers made their appearance and that he was shot while running His wound is painful but not dangerous |
