| Show Not Comforted I A lady was walking in a country road and passed a district school house just as the scholars were dismissed There were big boys and little boys black children and whit children tall girls and short girls The teacher herself came out last closed and locked the door with a snap and walked away up the hill Only one child was left a little girl of eight or nine done up in a purple hood and a knitted comforter She lingered one th on-e steps looking sadly ug and down the path and into the doorways evidently trying try-ing to find something The lady approached and asked what was troubling her It was her mitten that was lost the child said with perfect faith in the ladys sympathy She had only one left and they were new and her mother would scold her sol It was a new mitten the poor little thing repeated pitifully red with open work on the wrist The lady joined in the search but quite I in vain Then she tried a little philosophy on the youthful mind Sheiold the little girl not t care to tell I her mother bravely and not mind the I scolding There were many things in life t be borne with courage she herself had lost many things friends and possessions and hopesbut she had learned t be very brave about it Yes said the child to whom the argument argu-ment brought no comfort yes but Iou y I-ou ever lose your mitten Youths Companion |
