| Show Gould Wanamaker In Conference WASHINGTON April 4Jay Gould and his son George had a long conference with Pntmt O nnnl UTnn nlr h vv uo postoflico department today The question ques-tion of the Pacific Mail steamship line of which George Gould is president in connection con-nection with the new postal subsidy act was discussed Gould stated he was vyill ing to guarantee whatever moneys might be granted the steamsbio company under that act would be expended in creating now lines The question of rates on government gov-ernment telegraph business from July 1891 was also discussed as was the question ques-tion of increased mail facilities on the Union Pacific Telegraph tolls however were the principal prin-cipal theme of talk Next June will tie two years since Waaamaker fixed the schedule of rates which the government should pay the Western Union for telegraph service The Western Union refused to accept these rates but continued to perform the services ser-vices The consequence iS the government has paid nothing for its use of the telegraph tele-graph since that time and the amount now due the company has reached largo proportions propor-tions Gould talked the matter over with Wanamaker but no definite conclusion was reached Gould and his sou subsequently called on the President Secretary Foster and Secretary Tracy and spent a short time in the society of each I is learned these visits were merely social in their significance character and have no political or financial |
