| Show A BANKERS DEATH A Striking Similarity to the Eyraud Case H WAS LURED BY A WOMAN I The Most Brutal Murder Ever Committed in Guatemala Kisses Followed By A Bloody Scene Special THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORK April 4The details of a murder which bears a striking similarity t tie celebrated Eyraud case at Paris were received from San Jose Guatemala I yesterday The case will probably claim the attention of Inspector Byrnes today i Carlos Santibanez one of the most prominent promi-nent bankers of Guatemala mysteriously disappeared the29th of November Mr Santibanez baa a habit of carrying large sums of money valuable diamonds jewelry jew-elry eta about with him He was eccentric eccen-tric in his habits and as he often left his home and remained away two or three days at a time his family and friends attached no importance at first to his sudden disappearance disap-pearance on the 29th of November last When a week had passed however with no tidings of the banker his family became be-came alarmed and the case was put in the hands of tho police The rivers were dragged and inquiries were sent broadcast without avail Finally after weeks of fruitless searching and after thousands of dollars had been spent in following baseless clews the search was abandoned and the disappearance of Santibanez was acknowledged acknowl-edged by his family to be an unfathomable mystery About the 1st of February however the mystery was entirely cleared up by the confession of the mur derer of Santibanez while under the influence of liquor The mur derer who was named Gonzalez resolved to secure more money than the banker usually carried about with him and about tie ui iuveuiuur wruiu LU ouauuauez stating that he had a number of bills or exchange on American banks which he wished to dispose of advantageously and requested the banker to call at his house in the outskirts of San Jose on the29th of November for the purpose of inspecting inspectng them He also requested Santibanez t come prepared to pay for them as he was about to leave the country Mr Santi banez answered the letters in person going to the house of Gonzalez where his knock was answered it is said by Gonzalez mistress a most beoutiful woman who asked him t wait for a little as her hus band was not in at the time Then Gonzalez Gon-zalez described with great en thusiasm how the supposed Mrs Gonzalez entertained the wealthy banker and got him completely under her control When Mr Santibanez was kissing the woman Gonzalez and another Spaniard rushed into the room and assailed the banker with knives assaied Gonzalez doing Gonzale most of the stabbing while his mistress and his companion held the unfortunate man down to the floor When life was extinct they removed all his valuables Gonzalez then I put the horribly mutilated body into an airtight chest and a few days later shipped tho box to the United States This start ling confession was immediately followed by the arrest of Gonzalez his friends and his mistress Gonzalez and his assistant will undoubtedly be hanged while the mis tress of Gonzalez will probably be imprisoned impris-oned for life Tho affair has created great excitement San Jose It is said to be the most brutal murder ever committed in Guatemala |
