| Show THEY SEEK PEACE A Humor That the Association I is Weakening THE LEAGUE IS NOr AVERSE AI JoLfLson Cannot Deliver What He Has Sold to the Associations EnemiesAn Interview With Thurman There can be no doubt that the American Ameri-can Association regrets its hasty action in breaking away from the national agreement I agree-ment and is now anxious to setback under its protecting wing Indications multiply that such is the fact and the Association I 1 throwing out feelers all along the line i 1 In at least three directions attempts have been made to discover on what conditions I j the national agreement clubs will receive I them back That an under the rose ef j fort is being made unofficially t arrange I ar-range the terms of the readmittanco is indicted in-dicted by the resignation of Allen W Thurman a chairman of the board of con trol 1 trolThe 1 The League men are reticent a t terms and conditions of the surrender for twill be I i a surrender plain and simple preferring t I I wait until the bridge is reached before at tempting t cross it All the League mag nates are in favor of peace and the Ao ciation will have little difficulty in getting back on application The League men however will not consent to have wil t any conditions con-ditions imposed on them They consider I that the Association ha put them to some expense and a great deal of trouble which tho players taken from the Association in retaliation will not recompense Xeither do most of the League men seem t be de aJrous of making hard terms for the Asso cintion It is not likely that the League will demand anything more than an undis un9is pnted territory in Cincinnati I the Association Asso-ciation insists on havinga club in that city there will be no peace This is about the way it appears t me after considerable in vestigation League has been having more trouble with A Johnson after every one thought I he was eliminated from the game Johnson I John-son on his part claims that the League ha broken faith with him in declining to pay the 30000 promised him The League men on the other hand say that they arc ready t pay the draft when Johnson delivers de-livers the goods It appears now according accord-ing to the injunction tying up tho baseball base-ball park that Johnson did not as he asserted serted own the stock of the Boston and Philadelphia people He claims they gave it to him and they say that they merely allowed him to control it for his and their best interests Their interests not having been considered they apply for an injunction injunc-tion and the appointment of a receiver recc The case may be settled by the time this gets into type I Johnson loses and a receiver i appointed ap-pointed the League will have nothing from Johnson Now they do not consider Johnson John-son a poor man and do not propose to give him 30000 for nothing I Johnson proves in court that the Boston and Philadelphia parties him their interests in the gave ther interets Cincinnati Cin-cinnati club outright and wins the suit the League will pay the money otherwise 10t In order t be prepared the League has lease new grounds so that they will be ready t open April 22 a advertised They cannot afford t wait several months perhaps longer for the final decision of a lawsuit for even if Johnson wins there i sure t be an appeal if for no other purpose pose than t keep the ball park closed Of course these proceedings might be dropped in case of an agreement of peace which the Association i trying t bring about The truth about the charges of brokens faith is simply this Johnson sold something some-thing which he couldnt deliver and is howling murder because the purchaser refuses t pay for goods not delivered The public will size up the matter as it sees it and act accordingly Catcher Farrell and Outfielder Duffy both good batters will be included in the Boston Association club and will strengthen the team materially The resignation of Mr Thurman from the board of control if i permanent can only be viewed as n severe injury to the national game His course throughout has been one of strict integrity despite the tlurs thrown upon him I an interview with your correspondent Mr Thurman Sid that he did not consider that he owed any explanation or apology t the Associa tion and had none to make The charges made by newspapers particularly in his own home Columbus where ho had lived so many years demanded some answer His was somewhat brief I was appointed he said with earnestness earnest-ness to serve as one of three judges to determine such cases a came before the 1 board under set of rules known generally cs baseball laws drafted into and under the national agreement I was not sent there as a partisan president t decide always al-ways in favor of my organization and when I met in board as one of three judges I ceased to be an Association partisan On account of the negligence of the very people who appointed me one of the judges in the vexatious baseball muddles I decided de-cided a the rules practically ordered me t decide I should have been unfaithful t my trust had I made any other decision By refusing toviolate that trust the Association i Asso-ciation charged me with treachery and removed re-moved I me from office Thats the whole II caseVhile While we are quite in the dark a to the reasons of Mr Thurmans resignation there are three quite apparent One that ho resigned as a concession to the Associa tion in the peace conferences alleged t be and probably going on in Cincinnati Cincin-nati The second one is that the League insists on Thurmans reinstatement a i i president of the Association and he has I I resigned in order t give them a chance t do the trick a easily a possible < The third reason may be that Mr Thur man is utterly disgusted with the ingratitude ingrati-tude of the Association particularly the Columbus club and ba chosen to retire and devote himself t his own business which has suffered more or less during his I constant pilgrimages as the white winged angel of peace You can take your choice or figure out a new theoryW W I HRRISI I I |
