Other roles range from Shakespearean roles to light, modern comedy. In her spare time she trains horses, some of which have won high honors. MR. LONG and Miss Cole are sophomore students at WSC. Both are winners of the Talent Scholarship in Theatre Arts. Not more than four students stu-dents in any one year are awarded this prestigious honor. hon-or. Miss Cole is the recipient of a State Normal Scholarship, also. She plans a career in theatre education. The daughter daugh-ter of an accomplished performer. perfor-mer. Miss Cole has worked most of her life in theatre. In high school she played several important roles including Eliza Doolittle in "My Fair Lady," and the leading lady in "Kiss Me Kate." Before she was out of high school, she worked with a summer stock company in which she again played in "Kiss Me Kate." Mr. Long came to the Golden Gol-den Spike company with extensive ex-tensive high school and college performance experience. He made his debut at Layton High School in the role of Dauntless in "Once Upon a Mattress." He went on the play important roles in "A Funny Thing Happened Hap-pened on the Way to the Forum," "The Robber Bridegroom," and "The Student Stu-dent Prince." He has also worked on a variety of technical technic-al crews preparing and running productions. Two girls from Bountiful, one from Centerville, and a young man from Layton, are working with the Golden Spike Theatre company now performing per-forming three musical productions produc-tions in Ogden. BRENDA LODI, a graduate of Davis High School, is the daughter of Allene Brown of Boise, Idaho, and John Lodi of Pahoa, Hawaii. Teri Cowan, a graduate of Bountiful High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Campbell. She is married to Thomas Cowan of Absecon, New Jersey. Melinda Cole is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Cole of Bountiful. She is also a graduate gradu-ate of Bountiful High School. Terry Long is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Long. He graduated gra-duated from Layton High School in 1980. Mrs. Cowan is working as Company Manager for the core company of actors and actresses performing in three major musical productions. The season opened on June 25 mers were selected from more than 200 auditioners to make up the central company. Each will play an important role in all three productions. In "The Sound of Music" Miss Lodi plays Liesl, the oldest old-est daughter of the VonTrapp family. She sings and dances the ever-popular "Sixteen-going-on-Seventeen." In "The Boyfriend," she is cast as Hortense, the sprightly French girl with a hand in everyone's lives. In "Gods-pell." "Gods-pell." the director has chosen to have company members use their own names. Early in the show, Miss Lodi introduces the well-known theme song of the show, "Day by Day." MISS COLE is cast in "The Sound of Music" as the elegant ele-gant Baroness Elsa Schraeder. In addition to the acting challenges chal-lenges of the role, she sings a delightful duet with William Lawrence, cast as Max, "How Can Love Survive." In "Godspell." she performs in all scenes, and is featured as a dancer and singer in the spectacular spec-tacular production number, ".0 Bless the Lord My Soul." In "The Boyfriend," she is cast as the female lead, Maisie, in which she sings and dances her way through the entire production. pro-duction. Mr. Long plays the vicious town mayor. Herr Zeller, in "The Sound of Music." His featured number in "Godspell" "Gods-pell" is "Light of the World." In "The Boyfriend." he plays the part of a slightly addled French teen-ager named Alphonse. AS COMPANY manager. Mrs. Cowan is responsible for assisting the three directors during rehearsals. One director direc-tor is a professional from New York City brought to Ogden for the summer festival. Another is from Wisconsin where he ran his own repertory company for eight years. The third, also from Wisconsin, is a graduate of the U of U, where he was cited as an outstanding director. Once a show has gone into performance, Mrs. Cowan is responsible for the running of the entire production. She is also responsible for coordinating coordinat-ing activities of company members and keeping rehearsals rehear-sals and performances running smoothly. MR. LONG, Miss Cole, and Miss Lodi work long hours in preparing for the three productions. produc-tions. Technical work on sets, costumes, and box office begins be-gins each morning at 9 a.m. All company members work until noon on technical assignment. Miss Lodi and Mr. Long work in the scene shop preparing sets and properties; Miss Cole works in the costume shop. After a break for lunch, both girls rehearse from 1:45 until 4:45 p.m. Dinner break is followed fol-lowed by a call for makeup at 6:30 with performance curtain time scheduled each night for 8 p.m. MRS. COWAN graduated from WSC in early June with a BA degree in theatre. During her tfme at Weber State, she had played a number of important impor-tant roles in WSC Theatre pro-ductions pro-ductions including Mme. Ranevskaya in "The Cherry Orchard," and the title role in "The Prime of Miss Jean Bro-die," Bro-die," and Rita in "Uncommon Women and Others." She was awarded the M. Thatcher Allred Award at the end of her senior year for outstanding service to theatre during four years at Weber State. She was also cited as the best actress for her role of Jean Brodie. Miss Lodi is a senior at Weber We-ber State this year. She worked work-ed in summer repertory theatre last year in Wyoming. A theatre major, she has played a variety of roles during her college col-lege training, including Sandy in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" for which she was nominated to compete for the Irene Ryan scholarship, a competition limited to the wuii pci iui manic m uuuv pell." The second offering of the season, known as the Golden Gol-den Spike Theatre Festival, opened "The Sound of Music" on July 2. The third production, produc-tion, "The Boyfriend" will open on July 16. Each of the shows will continue to play each week-end through August Au-gust 8. MISS LODI, Miss Cole, and Mr. Long were chosen in March to join the carefullv selected company. Ten perfor- |
