Show North Salt Lake Gets Time On A Police Dog I NORTH SALT LAKE A California dog trainer has agreed to give North Salt Lake officials 30 extra days to pay for a new police dog. The compromise ;"will allow the city to purchase one of 1 1 highly-"trained highly-"trained German Shepherd K-9's before the "pick of the litter" are all sold. COUNCILMEMBERS budgeted $4500 for a new police dog following the death of one of the city's own K-9's, but learned recently that only a small amount of money will be available during July for city purchases. Mayor Robert Palmquist said only $23,000 is available avail-able during the month and that plans have already been made to buy several police cars and to pay off some city insurance premiums. NORTH SALT Lake wanted to buy the dog in September, but learned Tuesday night that 1 1 German Ger-man Shepherds are now available in California. Policeman Steve Harder, whose K-9 companion Cyrus died several weeks ago from a rare blood disease, said he "called in some personal favors" and was able to convince one California dog trainer to let the city have the dog "on credit" for 30 days. MAYOR PALMQUIST said the city will have an ample supply of budget money in August to pay for the dog. Officer Harder has agreed to pick up the German Shepherd later this month while he is on vacation. THE CITY council agreed to the proposal and were noticeably pleased when told of the "credit" t idea. Mayor Palmquist said the. city's K-9 corp asked for the purchase of the additional dog when they learned there were so many trained Shepherds available. MOST OF the K-9's are born in Germany, then transferred into the U.S. for police training. North Salt Lake buys their dogs from Adelhorst Kennels, Riverside, Calif. The dogs are trained to obey commands in the German language and police officers, as well, must be trained on how io handle the K-9'. mdm |
