Show Darts: Optimistic By KEITH DUNCAN Ward Sawley says the natural natu-ral instinct of a good athlete is to be primed and ready when a new season begins. If that is the case, the Darts are going to be loaded with some prime prospects once the new football foot-ball season gets underway. A NUMBER of Davis football foot-ball hopefuls have shown up early for the annual summer pre-conditioning camp. Officially Offi-cially the camp didn't open last Monday, but no one told them that. Darts have been frequent users of hhe weight room this summer and some have attended football camps hoping hop-ing to pick up a pointer or two, BEN HORNE, who didn't see much action at the quarterback quarter-back slot last year, says he has a better chance of seeing more time this go around. His participation in the Utah State football camp a few weeks ago, his third straight year in fact, is something he feels will benefit him. "IF YOU go there to learn you can't help but come away with something to help you. Mark Pierce, the new coach at Viewmont this year, was there and gave me some good pointers poin-ters on my drop back," said Home. The Aggie camp was loaded with several quality coaches and pros according to Home who will have to battle with junior Rick Secrist for the Davis quarterback position. Secrist was also in attendance at the Utah State event. THE SUMMER weight program has helped to strengthen streng-then Home's arm. He claims . that if the lines gives him time fans may see the Darts doing a little more passing this year. "It could really be a solid year for us," he claimed. And as most mature athletes would say, Home says the Darts will take each game, one at a time. The first is a home opener against the Ben Lomond Scots on Friday, August Au-gust 28, under the lights. DAVIS TRAVELS to Sky-line Sky-line the following week then returns home Sept. 1 1 to host Clearfield. Davis will go from one of the biggest 3-A schools to one of 4-A's smallest this season. According to Sawley it will make a difference but he says the Darts will be ready to play on Sept. 18 when Davis travels to Viewmont for their region opener. HIGHLAND visits Davis on Sept. 25 for the Dart's homecoming home-coming game. On Oct. 2, Davis travels to East then takes a break in the region schedule to battle Bonneville in Ogden. Woods Cross faces the Darts on Oct. IS and Bountiful comes to Davis Oct. 23 to round out the season schedule. HORNE IS as optimistic about ab-out the new season as his coach. "We could be strong at every position," he said. David Home, Ben's father, who once attended Davis High isn't getting any kind of break once autumn time settles in. This year he'll probably be a regular at Davis games. Last fall another son of his finished out the season as a defensive end for the Wyoming Cowboys in the WAC. "I FEEL good about how hard the kids are working," said Sawley, "I'm very optimistic." opti-mistic." Competition might be a little more keener and perhaps tougher on a week to week basis over last year. The Darts play some schools in their brand new region that have always al-ways been good football schools. One thing the Darts enjoy is elimination of travel to Logan, Bear River and Box Elder. |
