" i ' i t 1 i ,i v;1 ALAN MKLDRUM liOl'M II I I Three years ago a group of sophomore sopho-more football players entered the program at Bountiful High with high expectations of playing play-ing foi Ihe state title as seniors. A I. O I' OF w Liter has gone under the bridge since those days but one athlete who has remained near the top of the group has been Alan Meldrum. "A lot of players didn't play this year that we thought would for various reasons but that just made the others work harder," noted Alan. FOR HIS efforts Alan was recently named first team all-state all-state by both Salt L ake papers. This past season big number 70 could be seen on both sides of the line either on defense or offense. "Some college scouts say they want to make me an offensive guard. I'll do anything any-thing to play." THE INTERIOR line isn't exactly what some people would call a glamorous position posi-tion vet Mr. Meldrum saw it that was. "It's an important position', just ask the tunning backs. 1 like H because it s hard and physical. It's also a lot of fun when you make a good clean block and put someone up in the blcacheis. That's itist as rewarding tome as seoimg a touchdown, he added with a smuk. At h'V and pomuis it isn't hard to pick out Alan m a game or on films but he has ounsxsicin for getting poticcv. hv othes. Uhat harrcned to ou guy s this season .' After aa. ihe Braves managed to beat the top ranked clubs in the state, then lost to the other guvs. "All the injuries and illness didn't help matters but what it boils down to is that we just didn't play well when we hail to. We made a lot of mental mistakes and in a league as tough as ours was ymu couldn't win with mistakes." EVEN GOING into the Highland game the Braves were optimistic about going to state, but then those twothings popped up again. "1 was sick and only played on offense, and again we made mental errors and didn't play well." Alan is now concentrating on basketball. "It helps the quickness, besides there's plenty of time to lift weights." buflhe college folks are still hounding his doorstep for football. foot-ball. Being named all-state meant a lot to Alan. "It's a great honor and something I worked hard for and wanted. All high school players should work haid both on and off the field." Against Yieumont he rushed for 2s" yards on ten carries, and then returned a couple of purls for around VJ xards. 1 hings were going great for Brent and the Darts until he separated his shoulder in the game against Ben Lomond. By his own admission he wasn't the same follow ing that injury . "Before, when I was running with the ball 1 wanted to put my head down an.! run over people, but after the injury I guess it was always in the back of my mind and I ran straight up to avoid getting hit there." EVEN THOUGH being named all-state is a great honor. hon-or. Brent would have traded it for one more game at least. "It was my goal to play on the turf at Rice Stadium. 1 wish we could have. Sure I would trade the individual recognition for that chance." Those thoughts sj ill lingered when Brent reported for basketball. bas-ketball. "That first week of practice was miserable. I almost quit because I knew football was still going on and I should be playing. But now I'm enjoying basketball and looking forward to a good season." BEING THIS honest with himself. Btent was asked to sum up his impressions of himself. him-self. "I alway s want to be honest. hon-est. Being cocky never got people anywhere. As tar as football goes 1 look at Brent Hatch as being a haid worker who is quick rather than fast. He can run 50 yards great but then starts lugging a little. As far as life goes. Brent Hatch will be successful." Brent would give any thing to play high school ball again. "I would work hard, especially especial-ly on the weights which I hate-to hate-to do. It goes bv too fast." Norm looks to Highland and American Folk games because he caught seven passes in c.k Ii game, but then the W oods Cross game was by far his most yardage. NORM IS now convinced that football helps out in basketball. bas-ketball. "Sure I d lecommend it because it gets you ready physically for the season and our mental attitude is gte.it tins year lollowing our success in iootball.
