Show LOSS OF ATHLETE HARD BLOW TO RED DEVILS Death of Blaine Bird Following Friday Game Shocks Students, Sport Followers The untimely death of Blaine Bird, who died following a heroic performance on the gridiron last Friday, brought to a close a life of leadership, outstanding sportsmanship sports-manship and friendliness to classmates class-mates and associates alike. In high school sports, his passing pass-ing will be hard felt. Blaine was one of. the schools brilliant athletes ath-letes who performed equally well on the sports field as well as in the school room. During this year he has held down the position as center on the Red Devil football team and has done so with outstanding out-standing ability. He was a letter-man letter-man of last year, playing semi-regular semi-regular all during the season. In basketball, Blaine's outstanding outstand-ing ability and leadership won for him the honor of being selected to lead his teammates this coming season as their captain. He played regular on Coach Hughes club last year and was on the team during his sophomore year also. Blaine also played tennis and participated partici-pated in the. spring sports programs. pro-grams. As studentbody president, he headed the school's most important im-portant office and filled his position posi-tion well. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Arvil Bird, Blaine has always had the ardent support and proud backing of his parents who have seen him participate in his varied school activities. . Principal P. K. Walker, in expressing ex-pressing his sentiments over the death of Blaine says : . ' "Many times this week we have paused to do honor to Blaine Bird, a great student and leader one who was loved and respected by by all members of the faculty and student body of the school. Due to his friendliness and his ability as a leader he was selected three years ago, by the students of the Springville Junior high school to be their president. Again as he entered his senior year the student body asked for his leadership. leader-ship. He accepted this responsibility responsibil-ity and became Mayor of the Springville high school. He has given his all for its improvement and honor. We shall always appreciate him and the many fine things he gave us in the short time he was here. Each member of his team, the council, and the entire student body feel that' they have lost not just a fellow student but a personal per-sonal friend. As the student council of the school continues their activities this year they will think of him and the splendid start he has given them. They wil try to plan als they .think he. would have planned and as he would like them to continue. Thus the life of Blaine Bird will be reflected in the lives of the students; and Springville High School will continue con-tinue to be a better school because be-cause of his leadership." |
