June D Daniel Neff had a narrow escape from death while at work in the South Swansea shaft here last night. Mr. Neff was at work in tile bottom bot-tom of the shaft and the cage, which was above him on the 80e-foot level, slipped down upon him. He was unable to get away and was imprisoned beneath the bottom of th cage. There was some water wa-ter in the shaft, and he was In danger of being either drowned or crushed to death. Hoeever, he was rescued as soon as possible pos-sible and taken to. the surface. His .Injuries .In-juries consist of a broken angle and aome bad bruiser, which 'were dressed by Dr. HensJ. Unless there are internal Injuries In-juries his case is not considered dangerous. danger-ous. The engineer had oiled the machinery which regulates tha cage and when it started to slip down from the 800-foot level he was powerless to atop It. The brakes did not work properly and the cage went slowly down upon Mr. Neff, who was unable to eecapa to a place of safety. The accident is the second at the mine in the past two weeks. Emil Nelson, a pumpman, fell to his death in the same ehaft one week ago last Saturday. Mr. Neff would undoubtedly have been crushed to death had It not been for a drill standing up in the shaft, which re-, eel red the weight of the' cage and held It about ten Inches above the bottom. Hia escape is considered miraculous. 111 |
