Show SUSC Debaters capture U of U Meet Southern Utah State College debaters have firmly fir-mly established themselves as the squad to beat this season following their sweeping victory at the University of Utah Invitational In-vitational Scrimmage. "If a sweepstakes award had been given, we'd have won it handily," SUSC Forensics Coach M. L. Smith said. "As it was, eight trophies were given, and we came home with five of them. .The University of Utah won the other three." Among the schools participating par-ticipating in the first debate tournament of the 1979-80 season were Weber State College, Colorado College, Idaho State University, Brigham Young University, Utah State University and the Air Force Academy. "This was strictly a debate tournament," Smith said. "It won't be until the fourth tournament-the Pike's Peak Invitational--that any of our individual event specialists will SUSC placed five teams in the semi-finals at the U of U to capture two first places. "I've felt all along that we would have some excellent debate teams this year but I didn't know until this week just how good they are," says Smith. The first place trophies were won by freshmen teams Jerri Price and Allen Burch and Denise Brooks and Scott Pullan. Burch is a graduate of Timpview High School, Provo; the other three are Bingham. High graduates.' 11 Semi-finalists included veteran debaters Frank Misak and Craig LeDuc, Bingham High School graduates who have successfully, suc-cessfully, debated for SUSC in the past, and another team made up of veteran Vickie Green, Bingham, and her partner Chris Lathrop. Lathrop is a sophomore transfer student from BYU who is also a graduate of Bingham High School. Still another team breaking into the semi-finals included freshmen Kim DeAdder, Orem High, and Dan Ashworth, Bingham. Smith said that another SUSC debaters won five trophies in their first meet this season. "What a great way to begin the new year," Coach M.L.Smith (left back) says. team contributing to SUSC's overall success in Salt Lake City was that of Tove Hor-ton, Hor-ton, Springville High, and Karen Reeves, Cedar High Schools "We attribute our early season success to three major factors,"- Smith said, "first to the high quality of freshman recruited this fall, second to the exceptionally storng preparation for the contest, and third to the great squad spirit." Neil Gardner, a senior communications major from Cedar City and former debater is the assistant, coach for SUSC forensic teams -this-yrarr- SUSCMeanis will leave this week 1 to compete in the Rocky Mountain Swing, a tournament held at the universities of Wyoming and Northern Colorado. Following that they will compete in the Fullerton Invitational in southern California. |
