Show Timpview captures Sweepstakes in High School Shakespeare Competition i - ; . ' J ; Fred C. Adams (L) presents awards to sweepstakes winning Timpview High School students at third annual High School Shakespeare Competition held recently at SUSC. Timpview High School won sweepstakes honors at the third annual High School Shakespeare Competition held recently at Southern Utah State College but the honors and awards were scattered among many schools. "Competition this year was keen, and it was 100 percent better than last year," R. Scott Phillips, theater promotions coordinator coor-dinator at SUSC, said. "In the three years of competition, com-petition, this was by far the most impressive." "As you would expect, the larger schools accumulated the most points, but many smaller schools had students who won superior ratings on individual performances," he explained. "Because of the growth of the annual contest-from only a few schools the first year to entries from 24 schools this year-there will be two divisions of competition com-petition next year, one for larger schools and another for the smaller schools," Phillips said. Over 300 students competed com-peted in the SUSC contest this year. They represented schools from all over Utah parts of Nevada and Arizona, and even California. Sweepstakes winning Timpview students were coached by Chris Bauer. It is the second year that the Provo school has entered the SUSC contest. In an extremely ex-tremely close race, Skyline High School, Salt Lake City, edged out Las Vegas's Chaparral High for second place. Skyline's coach is Tom Stokee; Chaparral's is Leonard Paul. A scene from "A Midsummer Mid-summer Night's Dream" netted Skyline first place in ensemble competition. Skyline seniors Ed Bateman and John Elmer received another first place in duo scene competition. Both were awarded full-tuition scholarships to SUSC. Bineham High School's Two of them-Dr. Daniel Alkofer, Idaho State University, and Peggi Barretta, Utah Shakespearean Festival actress-judged mono scenes. Another two, JoAnn Patton, another USF actress, ac-tress, and Dr. Jerry Crawford, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, judged duo scenes. The fifth judge, Dr. A. Wilbur Stevens, UNLV, traveled from session to session and made evaluations on the state of the arts in secondary schools. "Dr. Stevens was very pleased with the competition this year," Phillips said. "He was here the first year and commented that the level of Shakespearean expertise on the high school level is progressing along at an excellent speed." Cherelle Clark also won a full-tuition scholarship for her performance as Cleopatra in mono scene competition. She was coached in the scene from Shakespeare's "Anthony and Cleopatra" by Bingham drama coach Debbie Merrill. Superior ratings in mono scene competition were also won by Julie Wright, Juab High School, who tied for second place with Timp-view's Timp-view's Timothy Wadham, and to third place winner Racquel Stanworth, Cedar High School. "The fourth annual High School Shakespeare Competition Com-petition is tentively scheduled for the last week in September next year," Phillips said. "We've already planned a new workshop on fencing and . have planned to present a special theatrical performance per-formance for our high school guests." Five judges were on hand for the contest this year. |
