Show Junior high grapplers compete for Davis County titles According to Mangrum, only four of Mueller Park's varsity wrestlers were ninth graders this year. Next year's team should boast a number of returning grapplers with solid tournament experience. FARM IN GTON After taking third in the south end tournament, Coach Allen Porter and assistant Brent Stephens had high expectations expecta-tions for a strong Husky showing in the district tourney. With 10 of his grapplers qualifying for the meet, Farmington's chances looked promising. According to Stephens, seven of his 10 wrestlers won their first round matches. The next round, however, was a different story. Almost all of his athletes lost in the second round. Ultimately, three Farmington grapplers placed in the tournament. Eighth grader Brandon Bybee claimed first place in the 98-pound class while teammate Trevor Nielson, also an eighth grader, won fourth place honors in the 85-pound division. Nate Taylor also claimed a Farmington fourth place finish in the 1 50-pound bracket. By G. BRETT HART WOODS CROSS-Junior high school wrestlers gathered Monday at Woods Cross High School to culminate their season with the district championship tournament. When the dust cleared. Central Davis was crowned district champion, cham-pion, Centerville took second and Bountiful tied with cross-county foe Kaysville for third place. To qualify for the tournament, entrants had to take at least fourth place in the Davis County, north and south end tournaments held separately the week before. CENTERVILLE-After winning the south end tournament, the Chargers set their sights on the district crown. Centerville took 16 grapplers to the district tournament; nine placed. In spite of the outstanding showing, the Chargers fell just 10 points short of the district championship and would have to settle for second this year anyway. Centerville does boast three district champions, however. Ninth grader Nam Tran capped an undefeated season with the district title in the 125-pound bracket. Gavin Brandon, who lost only one match during regular season competition, com-petition, claimed the 130-pound title. ti-tle. Brandon is also a ninth grader. Finally, ninth grader Justin Ericksen finished his season with a first place tournament showing in the 120-pound 120-pound category. The Chargers also had two second, se-cond, third and fourth place finishers. Finishing second for Centerville was ninth grader Nick Murray in the 92-pound bracket and eighth grader McEwan Bender who competed in the 104-pound category. Third-place finishers for Centerville Center-ville included ninth grader Wyatt Dilen in the 172-pound weight class and seventh grader Matt Steel who anchored the 85-pound spot for the Chargers. Finishing with fourth place honors for Centerville' were 110-pound 110-pound Jon White, an eighth grader, and 92-pound Colton Lawrence, a ninth grader. Second year coach Mark Tate said the team's success was due to their mental attitude. "We set our goals at the first of the season, and we went into the matches expecting to win. Tate said he expects the Chargers to have a strong year again next year with the return of six of his varsity wrestlers. BOUNTIFUL The Eagles tied with Kaysville Junior High for the district's third place spot. Of the 12 Eagle wrestlers that competed in the district tourney, 6 placed in the top three slots. Bountiful boasted three first place finishes, three seconds and a third. Doug Mahlstede capped off a perfect 14-0 season winning his se cond consecutive district title. Mahlstede was the district's champion cham-pion last year in the 110-pound division as an eighth grader. This year, Mahlstede claimed the title in the 140-pound class. Eighth grader Tommy Hutchinson Hutchin-son also finished the season without a loss. Opponents facing Hutchinson Hutchin-son only managed to score three escape points against him in 14 matches. Hutchinson won the 78-pound 78-pound weight class. The Eagles' third, first-place finisher was Dan Brinkerhoff. Brinkerhoff, a ninth grader, came back from an overtime loss in the south end meet to win the district championship in another overtime match. Not only did Bountiful win the 78-pound division, the Eagles also claimed second. Seventh grader Brian Brinkerhoff, Dan's younger brother, lost to his teammate Tommy Hutchinson for the district championship. Also placing second for the Eagles were Carlos Piatt, an eighth grader filling the Eagles 120-pound 120-pound slot and Jared Martin, a 130-pound 130-pound ninth grader. The Eagles' only third-place finish was registered by eighth grader Guy Leavitt in the 125-pound 125-pound slot. Bountiful Coach Mark McOmber said he has enjoyed this year's team and looks forward to next year. "We had a good bunch of kids who had a good work ethic. They were almost too nice to be wrestlers,' said McOmber. "They're friendly off the mat, but when they get on the mat, they work hard. "We had a lot of seventh graders pushing the ninth grade varsity wrestlers. A lot of them will come back next year. We'll be really young, but we should do well." SOUTH DAVIS The Spartans began the 1990 season with a strong showing, but as the season progressed. pro-gressed. South Davis started to struggle. Only four of coach Clint Lewis' wrestlers qualified for the district tournament. Of the four to compete in the tourney, South Davis ninth grader Mike McLelland was the only Spartan Spar-tan to place. McLelland, who finished fin-ished his regular season meets with a perfect record, claimed fourth place in the 115-pound weight class. MILLCREEK--After the district's south end wrestling meet, coach Shawn Gardner took seven of his wrestlers to the district tournament. tourna-ment. According to Gardner, Millcreek did well in dual meet competition in spite of the fact that the Mustangs weren't able to fill three weight divisions and were forced to give competitors an 1 8-point advantage. However, Millcreek' s future looks promising; the Mustangs will have 20 returning seventh graders next year, six of whom filled varsity spots. MUELLER PARKFirst year coach Doug Mangrum took an impressive im-pressive number of grapplers to the district tournament. Ten of his 15 varsity wrestlers qualified to compete; com-pete; however, due to injuries and upsets, only three placed in the top four positions. Leading the Panthers, Brandon Cleverly claimed third-place honors in the 104-pound bracket. Brad Olsen and Andy Cetraro both won fourth place in the 98 and 125-pound 125-pound weight classes, respectively. Of the other seven Panthers to compete, five ended up with fifth or sixth place finishes. |
