In the end, they had the state I championship trophy handed to them. In the end, no one had played better, looked better or fared better than the state champion Bountiful Braves. Coach Larry Wall pointed out that the turning point of this season was August 24, on the football turf at Viewmont High. In Bountiful's first game, quarterback Austin Lindsey threw a long bomb to Chris Godfrey on the game's first play, a TD that seemed to set the stage for this group of young men who survived sur-vived challenge after challenge. The Braves got revenge for Jordan's Jor-dan's two victories over them last season, rallying for a fourth-quarter win over the Beetdiggers that seemed seem-ed to seal their Region Six championship. cham-pionship. They won in Tooele; they overcame a gutsy first-half effort by Woods Cross; they even survived that unfortunate letter to the editor. Not rain, nor fired up opponents, nor the apparent jealousy of a zealous parent could stop the Braves from taking it all. They had a student body that polarized around them, motivating them and driving them on. In the school's moment of anger came the moment of solidarity. The "Cone Heads" found new uses for Clipper newspaper bags, using them to gain television and newspaper exposure, and the Bountiful High spirit seemed seem-ed to grow stronger than ever. Larry Wall's staff of John Edwards, Occie Evans, Breck Fife, Braa Chris-tensen Chris-tensen and Jerry Staley made the building-up of these young men their top priority winning all those games was just a byproduct of that effort. They stressed teamwork, and perhaps no team has ever been as close as individuals as this team. Watching Chris Jones smiling j from ear-to-ear when his younger brother Marshall played the second half of a game in midseason was a memory this reporter won't forget. And the Braves had no bigger cheerleader this season than senior Kory Andreasen, the all -state linebacker who shouted encouragement en-couragement to his team members on every play. When the game was on the line, those "on the line" were critical elements to Bountiful's success, names like Bart Robinson, Tim Crowther, Jason Vickery, Doug Harding, Jon Harmer, Adam Moon and Brandon Wilcox. Philip Tate punted with great flair and extreme confidence for a junior. Jason Haslam emerged as 3-A's finest kicker. And so many other offensive and defensive players whose names we've mentioned previously worked in tandem for the same cause. "We told the players before the game that for many of our seniors, this would be there last game ever. We just wanted them to come out and give it their best," Wall said. The best was plenty good enough in 1990, the year that Bountiful High showed that, with teamwork, any opponent is beatable. The Braves emerged as victors over all of them. Congratulations. Chris Jones of Bountiful (center) took this handoff from quarterback Austin Lindsey and plunged into the line enroute to a few of his 182 rushing yards in Friday's victory. Jones scored four touchdowns and capped a marvelous career by helping the Braves win the 3A state title. Clipper photo by Brett Hart.
