Show Clayton takes highest honor in state for musical talent In a recent competition at Utah State University, Bountiful resident April Clayton won highest honors. The competition was sponsored by the Utah Chapter of the Music Teachers' National Association. r : - s I ' A $ y : r place winner of the Woodwind Auditions for the state of Utah, She will represent Utah at the Division Auditions to be held in Las Vegas, NevMon Jan, 5. April has won many competitions competi-tions 4nd honors as a musician. . Most recently she won first place in the 1990 Utah State Fair playing her flute in the Wood-windBrassPercussion Wood-windBrassPercussion Junior Division. Divi-sion. Because of a regrouping of the divisions, she was allowed to play in the Junior Division again this year, even though she won wi st place in the Junior Woodwind Division Divi-sion (ages 15-18) in 1988 as a 13-year-old. Jn 1989, at age 14, she won third place in the Senior (coMegc age) Woodwinds Division. She also won third place in the Intermediate Piano Division in 1989. April is a gifted compor as well. In 1989 she won first place in the Utah State PTA Reflections competition, and a national honorable mention for her musical composition. She was sponsored by Professor Bm -vj h f.. ; Composition aiea at t J - - of Utah, in the Intern,. tuma! BMI Composers Competition this year. In addition to the flute and piano, April also plays the piccolo and cello. She has been a member of the Bountiful High School orchestra and band. She is currently a!so in the Concert Choir at BHS and is one of :'ie accompanists. She has won six one-plus ratings in regional music, competitions; and last year, as a sophomore, she won a gold medal playing her flute in state competifion. April is also a member of Key Club and the National Honor Society Socie-ty at BUS. She is currently enrolled in three AP classes: calculus, physics phys-ics and American history. On Nov. 13, Apn! played in a recital at Steinway Hall. The recital was sponsored by her piano teacher, Douglas Humpherys. April's flute teachers have been Marcia Bramble, Bram-ble, Joan Bauman and I-laine Jorgensen. April also enjoys teaching flute lessons herself and has a number of pupils.
