Vernal man shot in chest by girlfriend A Vernal woman is facing 2nd degree attempted murder charges after an incident in-cident early Sunday morning that left her boy friend with a gunshot wound to the chest. Police were called to the Fisher and Backus residence, 358 V. 100 North, in Vernal at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. According Ac-cording to Vernal City Police detective Mel Curtis. Randal L. Backus. 27. of Vernal Ver-nal w as found at the scene suffering a .22 caliber pistol shot to the left chest. Backus was reported in good condition at Ashley Valley Medical Center Tuesday. Rhonda Fisher, 27. who reported the incident, was taken into custody, and is now out on S50O0 bail waiting arraignment arraign-ment on 2nd degree attempted murder charges. Detective Curtis said the tw o had been engaged in an argument which lead to the gunshot w ound.
