Show Scholarships for Fife Folklore The seventh annual Fife Folklore Conference Con-ference will be held June 13-17 on the campus of Utah State University, Logan. Designed for anyone interested in folklore and culture, the conference provides pro-vides an excellent forum for personal interaction in-teraction between participants and a distinguished faculty of nationally-recognized nationally-recognized academic and public folklorists. A limited number of scholarships scholar-ships are currently available for librarians, local historians or educators interested in attending this year's program. The conference will feature a program of lectures and workshops by a faculty that represents a broad field of expertise. Jay Anderson, Western Kentucky University, will introduce the world of custom, ritual and folkways; Barbara Alien, University of Notre Dame, will explore ex-plore the relationship between folklore and local history; Roger Welsch, University Univer-sity of Nebraska, will speak on regionalism and folk culture; Barre Toelken, University of Oregon, will discuss occupational folklore; and Jan Brunvand, University of Utah, will present pre-sent folklore in the modern world. The annual Fife Honor Lecture will be delivered by noted folklorist, oral histor-dian histor-dian and current director of the Folk Studies Program at Western Kentucky University, Lynnwood Montell. A special component highlighting the musical traditions of Utah's Carbon County is also scheduled. Performances by Hispanic, Italian, Slovenian and cowboy musicians, as well as a panel discussion by project folkloristis will be included. In addition, public folklorists from ten western states will meet concurrently : with the conference providing lectures and workshops on folk art. Throughout the conference, special emphasis is given to folklore in public education and its use by librarians, art. history or English teachers, and local historians. Those who are interested in integrating folklore into their programs are encouraged to apply. The Utah Folklife Center will award scholarships on the basis of a letter explaining the applicant's ap-plicant's reasons for wanting to attend and hisher strategies for carrying conference con-ference information back to local communities. com-munities.
