Show Junior High School Ballroom Dance Program Evaluated By L. C Miles. Principal, Cedar City Junior High School During the fall of 1958 a survey sur-vey was made of all the Junior high schools in the state of Utah regarding the status of ballroom dancing. The results were both interesting interest-ing and variable. Interesting because be-cause In almost every school the students were much more anxl- ous about dancing than the principal prin-cipal and faculty. Variable in that no two schools had similar programs of dancing all seem- J ed to have Ideas peculiar to the locality or tradition of the district. dis-trict. The Cedar City Junior High school enjoyed a happy medium. Following the survey in September Sep-tember 1958 the Cedar City Parent-Teacher organization became unusually concerned about the program and planned to do something about it. A dance committee of parents, teachers and students was selected se-lected by the association and charged with the responsibility of working out an up-to-date and ; sensible dance program The committees in charge are . now working on a schedule of one dance a month, preferably coming on a special day such as Halloween, Valentine, etc. It ha been found that decorations add a lot, simple but appropriate and ' that the dress of the young peo- pie has much to do with their I actions. . Inviting parents who are able . and willing to Join in the fun rather than sit on the sidelines . is proving to be a major factor toward the Improvement of the dance. The main factor it was found is letting the young folks da most of the planning and arranging: ar-ranging: Giving them the chief responsibility has made a great difference. At the recently held Valentine dance approximately 350 out of : an enrollment of 475 besides a couple dozen parents and teach- : ; ers attended and filled the floor from 9 to 11 p. m. Presentation of the Valentine King and Queen " was colorful The dances held only for two hours with no intermission, although an occasional floor show has added somewhat to the I success of the occasion. The aim of the committee Is to maintain a good wholesome ' atmosphere where the young folks can enjoy the evening of pleasant recreation. |
