Show Controversial Proposal Before Iron County Commissioners Provokes Strong Opposition Forest Service Withdraws Offer To Accept Donation of Yood's Ranch Iron County Commissioners, led by Chairman Clarence Clar-ence E. Miller, have for the past week attempted to acquire the sentiment of the people of the area rgardinR a proposal pro-posal to deed over property at Wood's Ranch in Cedar Canyon, Can-yon, to the U. S. Forest Service for development The Commission has met with all of the civic groups in Cedar City and the matter came to a head Wednesday noon at the regular meeting of the Cedar City Chmber of Commerce. Com-merce. At that meeting Commissioner Miller opened the discussion on the matter by reading a letter from Howard Foulger, supervisor of the Dixie National Forest, that indicated that the Forest Service, because of the strong opposition of the citizenry, had withdrawn its offer to the commission. The letter, dated Wednesday, Mar. 4. and first nubliclv an nounced at the chamber meeting, read as follows: "Dear Commissioners: During the past week there has been considerable discussion at the meetings of the Cedar City civic clubs and Chamber of Commerce Com-merce concerning the proposed donation by Iron County of the Wood's Ranch to the Forest Service. Ser-vice. I have personally discussed this matter with a number of people; many have wholeheartedly wholehearted-ly favored the proposal, and a few have strongly opposed It. I am a little surprised at the op-, op-, position that has developed, because be-cause I believe, as I am sure you do, that the Commissioners and Forest Service were sincere in thinking they were acting in the best interest of the citizens of Cedar City. The Forest Service has no reason rea-son to become embroiled In this controversy for at no time have we solicited the donation of the Wood's Ranch. The only reason for accepting the offer of the County Commissioners to acquire and develop this property into a recreation area Is to serve the people of Cedar City. In view of the attitude of the oppovng Individuals, I do not believe be-lieve ii wouifi be in the best interest in-terest of the Forest Service to acquire ac-quire tho Wood's Ranch. I am, therefore, withdrawing the offer by the Government to accept donation do-nation of the Wood's Ranch. I am taking this action at this time in the hope that it will ar-rest ar-rest further dissension and will make it possible to mite the local lo-cal clubs and other Interested citizens In a unified program to develop the Wood's Ranch by local lo-cal Interests. Very truly yours, II. R. FOULGER After the decision of the Forest For-est Service to take a "hands off policy the issue still drew a number num-ber of comments from those In attendance at the meeting. Suggestions Sug-gestions were made to the Forest For-est Service that the money It had be used for a number of other projects that Included erecting a similar recreation area adjacent to the Wood's Ranch property, to Improve the already existing campgrounds at Navajo Lake and elsewhere, plus a suggestion that the road from Cedar Breaks to Pangultch Lake be Improved. At an earlier date Mr. Foulger Indicated that If the development of Wood's ranch campground did remain with the county the Forest For-est Service would be willing to supply technical service and plans for proposed utilities that are available through Its agency.
