Show ' WIND STORMS IN UTAH When the wind blows the top off Salt Lake and leaves Ogden untouched, it is a clear case of chastisement for the capital. Hl Saturdas evening, Salt Lake was made nervous by a windstonu that did ,damage estimated at $25,000. Roofs were biown off, trees were upr.ooted and plate glass windows were smashed. One of the Salt Lake papers gives this account of the "blow": "Although glass from windows, signs of all sorts and bits of wood were flying around in the air on Main street during both of the windstorms, no accidents were reported at the emergency hospital. A number of houses were dam-aged dam-aged by heavy trees falling against them and in a few in-stances in-stances the roofs were demolished and some of the walls torn down. The saddest sight when the wind cleared away yes- . . tcrday morning was the fallen trees in the City and County building grounds. About eighty Norway spruce were torn from their roots and in most cases they cannot be replanted - park officials said. This loss cannot be estimated, according to S. R. Lambonrne, superintendent of city parks. The trees cannot be purchased at this time. A number were also blown down at Liberty park and about twenty at the New Westside park. These were locust, boxelders and spruce trees." Ogden has not had a storm of that destructiveness in years. Al-Wasatch Al-Wasatch range from above Brigham to south of Salt Lake, but' this disturbance was unusual because Ogden escaped, although Brigham City on the north and Salt Lake on the south were hard hit. These freaky winds 'often come without much warning and the storms which are known as "cast winds" are an anomaly in that they are "west winds" deflected downward by the mountain range and directed over the base of the Wasatch in a swirling motion. These occasional, winds, which now and then are separated by years, would be be called zephyrs in the cyclone belt. The pleasing thing is that, unlike Wyoming or Idaho, there is no long period of 1 disturbance in Utah. The-rweather conditions here, in relation tc 1 wind, favorably are commented on bv Visitors. |
