NEW YORK, Sept. 23. A highway robbery rob-bery was attempted on a street corner In tho heart of the city today, and as a result re-sult ono man Is dying and another Is badly bad-ly injured. Detectives See the Outrage. Samuol L. Johnson was set upon by two men at the corner of Tenth avenuo and Twenty-ninth street Only a block away wcro two detectives who saw a revolver re-volver leveled at Johnson's head whllo cno of the assailants went through tho victim's pockets. Beforo tho officers could get to Johnson's asslstanco ho had been beaten to the sidewalk with a fractured frac-tured skull and Internal Injuries which will probably causo his death. Set Upon by Confederates. Tho detectives, while attempting to arrest ar-rest tho two highwaymen, wcro set upon by a crowd of bystanders, who apparently apparent-ly were confederates. Pollco reinforcements reinforce-ments were necessary beforo tho arrest could bo mado. Charles Montgomery, ono of tho men arrested, who Is said to havo held up Johnson, was beaten until unconscious by tho ollce. |
