Burgoyne, : Associate Professor of Biology at Southern Utah State College, recently completed two four-year terms of the State Science Curriculum Committee. I The committee is an ad- visory body to the State ;i Board of Education on science curriculum for kindergarten through 12th grades, Dr. Burgoyne said. The principle function of the committee is the evaluation of text books for recommendation recom-mendation to the State Text Book Committee. Dr. Burgoyne notes that over the eight years he served as a committee member a number of significant things have happened in regards to science-oriented text books. "One of the changes has been a rewriting of texts to neuterize them," he said, "another is a new concert about evolution and creation which has brought about some changes in text emphasis em-phasis on creation." The SUSC biology professor has also watched a liberalization of treatment of the reproductive system, although some texts have been rejected for being too explicit, he said. "Other changes have included a movement towards more traditional approaches to teaching biology and towards more individualized instruction. Another development is an increase in texts for high achievers and slow learners," lear-ners," he said. |
