Show Redmen place 5th in Region take Seven Wrestlers to State ' " A J ' 1 - f , '- . i '-ire .ifi. Chris Nelson of the Cedar High School Redmen Wrestling Team picked up the only first place in Region Six tournament held this past week. The Redmen finished fifth in a field of nine and qualified seven wrestlers to advance to the stale finals which begin today, Thursday, Thur-sday, at the Marriot Center on the Brigham Young University campus. State finals will be Saturday. Finishing high in the standings at the Region Six meet held at Payson were Scott Shakespeare at 132 and Kevin Robinson at 107. Both picked up second place honors in their respective weights. Kendall Parry, wrestling at 105 pounds picked up a fourth place finish. Stan Torgerson at 126 and George Deltoro at 138 picked up fifth place awards and Chris Lamoreaux finished sixth in the 185 pound bracket. Those seven will advance to state. Pleasant Grove won the region Six title and will be one of the favorites in the battle for the 3A crown. WIN'S TITLE. Chris Nelson, wrestling at 98 pounds picked up the only first place finish for the Redmen in the Region Six meet held this past week. Nelson and six other members of the squad enter the State 3A tournament at BYU today. Pleasant Grove qualified 11 men for the state finals. Their stiff est competition for the crown will come from defending Uintah High School who has won the crown for the past three years. Pleasant Grove last garnered the state title in 1974. In second place in Region Six competition was Spanish Fork, followed by Payson, Springville, Cedar City, Timpview, Provo, Dixie and American Fork. In his battle for the championship of the 98 pound class Nelson was forced into overtime. Trailing after two rounds Nelson came on to tie and force the overtime and wound up with a 6-2 victory in overtime for the title over Haskell of Payson. Shakespeare won his way into the championship match to Beck of Pleasant Grove. Shakespeare suffered suf-fered shoulder injury in the second round and conceded the match rather than run the risk of suffering additional ad-ditional damage to the injury. in-jury. Robinson also won his way into the championship match but lost by a pin to Finney of Pleasant Grove in the title round. Coach Dave Clark reported that the tournament tour-nament was "one of the best that I've ever attended. All of the finals were excellent matches," he said. Coach Clark expressed an opinion that Region Six was the toughest region in wrestling this year and expected Pleasant Grove to win the state title over Uintah this year. |
